Can the Shopify theme be backdoored?
Ebay is full of cheap Shopify themes. I am not sure if these themes are safe at all.
How to check if the theme is legit and clean? Any advice?

I've worked with shopify a bit and I don't believe there is anyway someone is going to get access to your site through the theme.

potentially the only thing i can think off is to check if it has any remote javascript files that seem out of the ordinary.
but most of the ebay ones are ripped themes anyway
