What to do when scammed by well reputed member? - Digitly - May 27, 2021

Hello,

Since I am jobless due to Covid-19. I needed money to buy food for my young daughters. I decided to cash out the little money I had in my Coinbase wallet so posted here in the Currency Exchange section.

Then I was contacted by Percy on Skype.

He asked me to start a contract which I did. But as soon as I sent him the money blocked me.

Here are some screenshots

After initiating the contract I got busy chatting with him on Skype and processing BTC payment, meanwhile, he canceled the contract

and sent me this message on HF

Once he realized that I didn't check the message he sent on HF and also I am unaware of the fact that he had cancelled the contract, he decided to scam me:

Not really anything anyone can do for you. I would say open a deal dispute here Deal Disputes but if your contract was cancelled then I guess not.

Always deal with contracts.
Always protect yourself.
Use a MM if neccasary.
Try to keep deals on-site not on discord(could be imposters or fakes on there)

The way that started just sounded like an imposter. I don't think Percy would scam. How much was it for anyway?
Edit: yeah $50 is nothing to scam for and from what I heard these type of imposter scammers seek deals of $20-$50.

Sorry OP

I did start the contract:

But I was chatting with him on Skype and he said he accepted it

Since I had checked his profile, I trusted him.

looks like you're dealing with an imposter .
pm the user here first for verification and don't send anything until they accept the contract .

sorry for your loss

Well, you have to wait till the other person accepts the contract before completing deal.

Also did you chat with him at all on HF? If not how do you even know it's for sure him?

Luckily it wasn't for much money

This is why don't deal offsite. This is why you always use contracts. It may have been Percy, it might not have been. There's a ton of imposters around lately it seems.

Sorry to hear bud, but its probably lost.

Yeah this is why you don't deal off-site. You had no proof that was him. He never messaged you from his HF profile, he never accepted the contract (because he can't login to his HF account because it's not him), etc.

No reputable members are going to reach out to you and beg to do a currency exchange with you. They're all getting 50+ offers a day on HF.

anyone can say that ."hey im Percy , send contract to me ."
but obviously the real Percy won't accept that random contract being sent to them, happens to me as well when someone sent a contract so i cancelled it since i don't know who the guy is and we've never made any deals .

just be careful next time .

It looks like he assumed you were wanting to initiate a transaction and he was telling you that he can't. Not that he kept your BTC and wouldn't send you the money. Post the message you sent to him also. Looks sketchy to me.

TL;DR - you were scammed by an imposter.

I checked his message after sending BTC.

That just looks like he was telling you that he's not available for currency exchanges after you started a contract with him for a currency exchange.

You started a contract for a currency exchange that he was not expecting to happen, and he told you he wasn't available. No where in that screenshot does it say that he accepted any sort of deal with you.

Impostors are common on HF, you didn't deal with the real Percy.

If you only had notice the timing between his PM at HF and chat log of Skype

How does this confirm it's him?

Show messages of him giving you his Skype and then show the scammers messages with that same Skype name

What you gave proves nothing. Also your account being 11 days old and the fact you're running a crappy VPN makes me think you're trying to frame him. Provide more proof my guy.
