VPN did me no good. Did I use it correctly? - Tron40 - Jun 1, 2021

On a discussion forum site I've been frequenting, I've had some problems with certain people there that caused me to want to use a different username. However, the site doesn't allow "sock accounts", which I believe means having more than one account. Well, I gave it a try anyway by creating an account while running a VPN on my computer, and made sure to have the VPN on whenever I used that account. I thought it would hide my IP address or anything else that identifies what computer I was using or where I am located. When using my original account, I'd leave the VPN turned off.

Well, both of my accounts got banned for having a sock account. ☹️

My question is, of course, how could I possibly have been identified if I was using a VPN with the sock account--when creating it and using it? How could it have been matched with my original account which I made sure to use with the VPN turned off so it would look like the two accounts were unrelated?

It also makes me wonder if VPNs have any real use. I thought it was meant for privacy.

Ok. How so? Does a VPN not hide the identity of the user? Or is there a particular setting on the VPN that has to be adjusted for that purpose that I'm not aware of?

VPN's absolutely provide security and have their uses.
My question is, were you using a reliable VPN or one of those random free ones, and are you absolutely sure it was connected?

There is a possibility you thought you were connected, the vpn may have even said you were but in reality you were not. I had a friend who was once pirating some stuff of the good ole pirate bay and he didn't have his vpn on by mistake and sure enough his ISP came down on him pretty hard later that day with a lot of "warnings" not to do it again.

Anyways, I recommend ExpressVPN and [censored]. I've never had issues with either one.

I would recommend PIA, as they have been proven not to store logs and are very good
