I'm aware that "they don't really exist anymore." but I was wondering if there is any information on how they work and are found.

What do you mean they don't exist anymore?
If you're talking about malicious files I'd say a lot of the attacks today are still using that method. Try the "macro_pack" tool from github and see if it works for you.
