Turning 30 today - skull - Aug 7, 2021

So today I turned 30 years old.

Last few years has been wild, with not only the COVID spreading and locking down countries, I also got a kid.
I used to work like 16 hours a day before I got my kid, and now it’s hard to even be on top of the 37 hours week of work.
He is almost 3 years old, he is the sweetest boy I could ever wish for, that said I am not at all unhappy about remaking my life for him.
I just wish for him to be happy, anyhow I just wish I could get a normal day routine working.
The main problem is that I have one and a half hour to the office, so that means 3 hours a day on transportation, and my husband don’t have a car and cannot fetch the son from daycare himself yet.
I have been considering to quit my job and find another job, either something locale or fully remote.
This is my first real job and I have been there for almost years now.
I like it there, cause they allow me to also work on my own SaaS platforms when there is no work at their office, which is quite often lately l.
So I’m split, cause I wanna have a stable work/personal life situation, for both myself, my husband and my kid, but also I really like this job.
I also need the money, cause I recently bought a house.

For my birthday, I would just like you guys opinions on life and priorities that you do yourself between you work and personal life. Thanks all 🙌

Happy 30th Birthday bro ✌🙃✌

Don't you have immediate family that you can depend on and seek some help for taking care of your kiddo?

I also got a kid of 3 yrs old and a daughter of 6yrs old and it's very hard to take care of them and so glad that my wife is pretty helpful and always here for us.

Happy birthday mate. Hope you and your family have many decades of happiness and togetherness in store.

Im slightly older and recently got married so I still dont have a firm grasp on the work-life balance yet plus my workplace has no fixed work hours or work days so its very challenging for now. However, I still try to prioritize my family and person time as much as possible and try to avoid office calls after 5pm.

Happy Birthday hope you have a great day.

I would also look at asking extended family.

I personally would ask your husband to pull his finger out and help. Whether that's getting a bus or walking, cycling to pick your little one out. That would take a lot of the headache away from you!

Happy Birthday :)

I personally understand you regarding the work, I'm 27, turning 28 in 1 week. I'm currently working in IT and after my main job I study every night at home for a security engineer career, even the week-end so I don't go out often, however I don't have kids yet, and I don't plan to get or even get married so ... My case is not the same as your but I spend most of my time between work and study.

I would place my job at first, but that's because it's the only thing I have (don't be sad for me, I love this situation haha).

Have you considered to work from home 1 or 2 days per week ? Is it possible ? You could spend more time with your family.
Does your husband work ? Does he plan to get his driver license ?
Is the daycare far from your home ? Couldn't he goes with a bike, with a baby bike seat on it ?

I don't know the situation, but you seem to do a lot of things, maybe he could do more if he's not too busy ?

My husband has some serious anxiety and are unable to work. However, we are saving up to get him a drivers license.

And working from home is definitely an option if I find a new job. I have been thinking of doing it fully remote. Then I can get a job from anywhere in the world. I’m highly considering it, it’s just weird having to quit the current job.

Yeah I understand this feeling, besides we always know what we loose when leaving a job, but we don't know what we'll get in the next one.

Working from home is not an option with your current job ?

Happy Birthday!!

What job are you working at? We're currently in a very strong employee's market. There hasn't been a better time to profit (salary and/or benefits) from switching jobs. Depending on your line of work it can be very easy to get a good remote job (e.g. in IT) but it obviously depends on what you do.

You have to figure out if the potential 30h+/week savings in time + the whole daycare situation is worth looking for a new job and leaving one that you really like.
Also, some people just aren't build for home office.

Can't you ask your current employer if it's possible to work from home a few days a week?

Happy Birthday!

It seems like its time to re-evaluate who does what in your relationship. If your husband is unable to work, he should be able to look after your child(ren) when being at home. If he's not able to look after your child, not able to work, or able to drive a vehicle, then ask yourself what is he bringing to the table? I'd check to see if there's something that he is hiding from you.

Also, 3 hours a day in traffic is nuts, find something else, seriously, Software Security / Programmer is in high demand as far as I know so start looking for a job, keep your options open.

Anyway, its your birthday make it special!
