Tom Cruise and religion - bevc - Dec 30, 2021

You know something interesting? I think Tom Cruise might be unique amongst all living humans, as he's probably the only person on planet earth who could single handedly bring down an entire religion. Think about it - if Tom Cruise woke up tomorrow, and said "Meh, now I think about it, Scientology is a load of shit", the whole thing would collapse.

Right? I mean........right? It would, wouldn't it.

Doesn't that make Tom Cruise weirdly powerful? The guy from Top Gun could destroy a world religion with a sentence or two.

This is the lounge, so, that was just a thought I thunk. Weird.

I don't think it would take down Scientology. Would surely cause some damage to their reputation. Hard to call it a religion imho. If it's not a cult, then I don't know what is. Just because their lawyers were able to provide it religion tax exemption doesn't imho put it into the same category. It's one of the weirdest things ever and all done by the founder as a joke bet.

Hey anyone ever watch The Master (movie)?

There's a very small minority of the stupidest of the stupidest who are actually influenced by celebrities. Imo it's more likely the mass media would smear him

You think? It's not even that he's a 'celebrity', it's more that he's like, the face of Scientology. I can't see how it could survive if Tom Cruise called BS on it.

Even the pope, if he came out tomorrow onto his big balcony and said he'd realised that christianity was balls, the catholic church would just get themselves a new pope and say that the old one had gone mental. But with Scientology, if Tom Cruise said it, I think that'd kill it stone dead in the minds of pretty much everybody, I don't see that it could recover. Maybe I'm wrong.

Maybe you are right, but I think most people believe in the idea rather than the person sharing the idea? There has been many bad popes and catholicism is still around. If Fauci said tomorrow that the pandemic is fake, would most people admit that they've been fooled? I don't think so.

Btw, "onto his big balcony" made me laugh. A lot. 😆

I nearly added "wearing his funny little hat" but I didn't want to offend any catholics.

I dunno, I don't know that anybody actually believes in Scientology, I'm not even sure what its tenets are tbh - an alien god from a billion years ago and nuclear bombs in mountains, but that's just from South Park. Seems to me like it's one of those things that most people could be convinced to drop fairly easily.
