Secret gadget when you get caught by cops - mintudhagad - Apr 5, 2022

I've never seen this technique mentioned anywhere and I don't want LE to figure out ways around it. A lot of busts for criminals are because LE finds them with their computer open, but I found an easy fix for this.
1) If you haven't already, make sure your computer or any incriminating data is encrypted.
2) Search for "smart plug" on Amazon.
3) Buy one that is connected via wifi and has support for the Apple home app or google assistant if you're using Android.
4) Plug your computer into the smart plug and then plug the smart plug into your actual wall outlet. (computer -> smart plug -> wall outlet)
5) Setup voice a command and name the outlet "Lights", "Oven", "TV", etc... (anything other than computer or anything related to the computer you actually want to turn off) Now if police detain you / put you in cuffs, as long as you have your phone in your pocket or nearby you can just yell "HEY GOOGLE TURN OFF MY LIGHTS" and your computer will lose power.
Any information that was decrypted will re-encrypt (unless you stored it as plain text for some reason).
In America this will create a really gray legal area that no one has addressed yet because all you did was say "turn off my lights" and it will take them a lot of time and probably cost a lot of money to determine if freedom of speech applies in this situation or not.
You could also argue that you didn't mean to turn off your computer and "configured the app incorrectly" and confused your lights plug with your computer plug. This is clearly a last resort option and should be treated as such.
Give some popularity

This isn't a bad idea

As you said, more of a last resort but if it really came too it then it wouldn't be bad to have this option

Fair play man, haven't heard this one before I'll be honest

would be really helpful for a deadly hacker

Damn this is pretty good. I don't do any super illegal stuff but knowing my paranoid ass I would do this lol

Not a bad idea, but this is only the tip of the security iceberg.

This is actually pretty smart OP I am impressed with the simplicity of this idea gonna hit you with rep for this one.

Can we take it even further to protect whatever illegal information someone may hide on a computer?

So if this is a stationary machine, we could have a plug into the wall for the switcher, that triggers on “turn on/off the lights”.

This switcher should be connected to a way to high voltage, and then wired to the motherboard.

Whenever it turns on it will toast the machine.

However make sure never to trigger this while using the machine.

yeah this is possible, an electrical engineer has a better idea, he can program it easily

Okay, if we are in the business of making something completely from scratch, then the switch should have a mic, and trigger on specific events, and then also send high voltage to itself to destroy the evidence of any programmed trigger.

we should make that fit in the cpu itself, works like charm
but would be an issue if someone set something very normal
it can burst his ass any time

Yes definitely a dangerous game.

Although encrypted, it wouldn't break.

Gotta find the local river for that one.

This won't work, they will instantly rush the device and recover data from RAM. If you are under investigation for serious digital crimes - you are screwed and shouldn't rely on this.
If you are small-time, then sure this might work.

The best way to actually deal with something like this is by putting triggers around the room in which you have the computer - isolate yourself and the device and when any of those seals are broken it will shutdown. Block the PC into a concrete block with only access being ventilation holes to buy you time for it to shutdown correctly and not have anything available for a ram swap.

I believe this is the exact method that tigah carder or whatever his name was recommended.

If you're in a position where you think you need this fail-safe then you sure as hell could come up with a better way than gambling that Alexa will recognise your voice command for once lol.
