The corporate takeover of the internet, paired with the failing world economy that's pushed people to feel like they have to monetize every single one of their hobbies is largely to blame, too. 90s and 2000s internet was such a wonderful place. It got entire generations hooked on something that's since become a cesspool of manipulated content, opinions, and information and contrarians who get off on arguing and feeling more intelligent than strangers online.
