I got wood - Koyote - Apr 16, 2023 As some of you may know, I love my woodworking and gardening, and the other week I picked up a haul of some wood and tools for projects from both my grandparents' house and someone giving some away on Facebook Marketplace. Some of it was reclaimed wood which is useful for outdoor and basic works, and some was some higher end timber and slices I'll be turning into outdoor and indoor furniture once fully dried and treated. I grabbed this one plank though which had been neglected and left in a utility room for some time, so it was dusty, dirty, stained and generally not that pretty, but I knew it had potential: Spoiler (Click to View) After some sanding it's brought it back to the beautiful piece of wood that it actually is, showing the grain in a really pleasant way: Spoiler (Click to View) After oiling it and sealing it, I'm using this to make a small console table for our hallway as we have some limited space there, and it should be a really useful addition to that area. From the offcuts of this plank and some other pieces I had, including some wood sheets, I've made a little spring assisted footrest for my partner for when she works at home. I put some small springs in so there's some resistance, and it almost feels a little like an accelerator pedal, and has a satisfying push back for when you're a bit tense and want to stretch out a little: Spoiler (Click to View) I am working on many more things currently, and our house is full of previous projects already, but it's a really fun way to de-stress, create something new and potentially create things to sell on. Hope you guys like this content and I may post more in the future if you enjoy this kinda thing. RE: I got wood - Dread.Reaper - Apr 16, 2023 Cool, but what is that thing suppose to do? It's what I described in the post; it's a foot rest for when working at the desk, with some little springs for resistance so there's a satisfying push back when you put your feet down. Helps get into an ideal sitting position without feeling too stuck, and with a base board to stop it from rolling/flipping. I kinda figured it might be something like that, was not sure with the springs. I should have explained a bit better in the opening post maybe, my apologies. I wanted to make her a foot rest as she often works quite late at the desk, and I thought with the springs it'd have a unique bit of resistance so it's not too solid or uncomfortable. In a way it's like a foot pedal in a car, so you can put pressure down and it'll push back up once released. Probably could make some fun designs for a toy sit-in car when we have kids so it feels more realistic. Id put a [BRAND NAME REMOVED] on the other end where the 2 boards connect together to prevent the springs from being damaged. I plan on working on this coming up soon. myself. Hmm interesting idea! I was thinking of incorporating more springs at that end for added resistance, but a [BRAND NAME REMOVED] might be doable providing it's a thin base so it doesn't keep catching on the top piece. Could always felt it on the underside to prevent that I suppose. I may end up updating it and posting it here, will give you some due credit if I go down that route! Oh wow okay, is it a rolling box room? Looks like a very unique idea! What wood will you be working with? I am thinking of Pine for the Framing and the such. ![]() And its kind of a Mobile shelter system... Roof has Solar panels to support all electrical needs. Sort of a evolved concept to a portable minimalist homeless shelter. Im designing it so I can screw off into the woods and the such and still have my comforts. And yea, you could use gorilla glue for the thing piece of wood to secure the [BRAND NAME REMOVED]. That shits like cement. Make sure you treat the pine with a decent amount of oil and sealant, I've had a few projects start over because the pine was either just too soft overall or went too dry and ended up splitting a bit, but generally it's great for that kind of work. I really like that idea, would be a nice self sustainable unit with the solar panels and would keep in heat nicely I imagine. Just ensure you have vents so you don't retain too much moisture inside over longer periods of time. Would you have more wheels or tank treads if heading into the woods with it? Also are you going to be towing it in or would you have an engine involved? Gorilla Glue is great, I use it a lot for projects! Well, The choice of Pine is primarily for the weight factor, and primarily for the interior and framing, I am thinking of some sort of treated plywood for the exterior. I am also trying to incorporate it into a Urban environment so I want to try and conceal it to look like a Utility box, or something along those lines. And when I say into the woods, I mean more of valleys and the such in a Large city with a lot of green space. The design is to be 4 feet by 8 feet in length, with the section pulling out on industrial tracks and stands to support on the other end where there are no wheels. Resulting in an 8x8 enclosed space. I dont think I will need more wheels honestly. and for the time being I was planning on putting a roll bar at one end to push this where it needs to go. The plywood could work well, and for the interior you could potentially even use some flooring panels because they're so durable and resistant to damp/scuffs. I used some leftovers for the interior of one of my sheds and it's definitely made a difference and prolonged the life of it. I think you'll create something very special here, and I hope you share some pics of it when you've finished it! Ah I see, well it'll be perfect for that kind of environment I think. What's your estimate on overall weight? The fridge, tv and electrical will likely be the bulk of the weight, the Lithium batteries and the such will add quite a bit of weight, plus any water jugs I am transporting with me. RE: I got wood - ALEDIO - Apr 16, 2023 A small craft project very easy but certainly satisfying to do, I also love doing woodwork and I really enjoy it, I do it both to pass the time and to remedy small things that are needed around the house and so on. I have a large workshop where I can have all the possible and imaginable machinery for woodworking of every size, I can literally do anything I want and above all for free, these machines all belonged to my grandfather to whom they had been largely given or inherited from his father. Lately I've been thinking about making a project for which I'm recovering all the materials, I decided I wanted to make a homemade wooden canoe, I found some projects online and I had fun modifying them so that they fit my needs. Thinking about it, it's not even such a small project given that in the end the canoe will be around 5 meters long, it will be made using okumé marine plywood, in fact it is very waterproof and malleable simply by heating and moistening it, later I will proceed to cover all the 'boat with fiberglass in order to give the necessary shine, highlight the grain of the wood and waterproof it completely. I'll start the project this summer, the total cost of all this should be around 200 euros, so it's really cheap, a canoe of this type can be found online (for the basic versions) even around 1000 euros. In a few days I will go to collect the okumé plywood for the construction and as soon as it starts to get warm enough I will enjoy this entertainment. |
