What is effect of Tor on website security protocols - courtne30 - Jul 30, 2023

When routing my internet traffic through tor will my abilities to make purchases on websites/apps be inhibited due to me using tor?

Is this a stupid question?

  • Lots of WAFs like Cloud Armor and Imperva have a template that blocks known Tor nodes.

  • Tor nodes are a lot of times on IPv6. If a firewall only allows IPv4 you get a timeout.

  • Some software are coded and configured to only accommodate IPv4

  • You're sharing the IP addresses with everyone else who accessed that Tor node. Threat-centric firewalls like Fail2Ban will disallow you if they did an attack

Tor is not what it once was. A lot of legitimate sites are making Tor traffic jump through a lot of Captcha hoops or just blocking it completely (this sucks.)

In North America, the U.S government has control over a number of exit nodes.
In the rest of the world, you never know who's server you're exiting.

It's still a useful tool but people have to know it's limitations.
