08/11 - never forget "THEY GLOW IN THE DARK" - Bastille - Aug 3, 2023

If you see this thread, this is a bump from 2024, Terry Davis left us 6 years ago, let's keep this thread alive to never forget him, or to make people be aware that he existed.

It's 08-11, Terry Davis left us in 2018

I recently discovered Terry Davis, too late unfortunately as he left us almost 5 years ago (registered on HF 1 month after) but early enough this year to honour his memory the 08-11.

08-11 will be friday, I'll be at home and alone, only with my computer and probably a pack of beer, and I'm gonna download and dive into TempleOS.

For those who don't know who was Terry and what is TempleOS there are two great videos that cover them. I don't know that much about programming, and I wouldn't be able to translate how difficult the task was for only 1 man so I rather prefer to share these videos :

█████████████████████████████████TEMPLEOS EXPLAINED IN 100 SECONDS█████████████████████████████████

TempleOS | Down the Rabbit Hole (if you didn't watch this yet, you definitely should)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCgoxQCf5Jg&t=1s (video cannot be read through HF as it's 18+)

Spoiler (Click to View)

Do you know any programmer/hacker that was out of this world like him ? Do you have any anecdote about Terry ? Did you know him ? Have you ever tried TempleOS ? What are your thoughts about him ?

Would be glade to talk about him a little if some of you are interested

Yeah Temple is crazy. You can do some insane shit with it but at the same time it's absolutely batshit and shouldn't exist.

But through Terry we live.

I remember this, yeah this guy is a trip. Unfortunately highly intelligent people seem more susceptible to mental illness from my experience.

That being said the dude created some really cool stuff. RIP

If you scratch the batshit parts, most of it is pretty genius.

Yeah man, that was a gargantuan job, if started from almost 0, wrote a new language based on C, his libraries, and so on ... People that don't know often talk about the interface, but the magic is under the interface

i was browsing through shorts. funnily enough i liked something from him in the past, without digging deeper. then i watched a fuckton of shorts about him.
looked into all kinds of things i could find on the web, the only thing i haven't watched is the full documentary.

initially i was kinda weirded out by what he said in his full shizo phase, but something in me wanted to digg deeper. as the saying goes its a thin line between crazy and genius.

i'd definitely want to hear what you have to say about the interface one day!
thanks for sharing this with the community btw - we should keep this thread alive!

The full time documentary is gold, it's a chance someone has spent so much time to retrieve all these information, edited them, and commented them. We are lucky too because some people recorded some of his streams that are used in the documentary, even if a part of me is quite convinced that the people who recorded the stream were also the same that harassed him ... just to laugh at him again ...

I used TempleOS one time at his date of death (11/08), but I struggled a lot to use it to be honest, I think I need to read more about how to use the OS, besides my english is not perfect so diving straight into this, without understanding everything shown on the screen was quite ambitious from me. But regarding the interface I heard in the documentary that what he did was amazing, like you have GFX feature INSIDE a command line window, this guys was something, really ...

Thanks buddy, I'll try to dig up this thread every year to make sure people never will forget him 🤞

well, most great minds where laughed at in the beginning. but i'm sure that someday, someone will use the main idea from his OS and turn it into something incredible!

i just looked into howto-video's and some people using it and i was confused af. to be fair i just started a few months ago with terminal based os's like linux.
i'm not a native speaker either, but it just fuels my ambition to go even crazier at tasks. remember, things are either a curse or a blessing - depending on how you look at stuff.

i'll definitely will join the efforts to bump it from time to time. who know's, maybe we spark the perfect Terry Davis one day :)

2024 BUMP

Bumping this thread because it has been 1 year already ... Terry Davis left us 6 years ago.

Tonight, like every 8/11 nights of the rest of my life, I'll buy some beers, sit in front of my computer and explore TempleOS in memory of Terry. If some of you want to discuss about him feel free, I hope that this year more people will discover him through this thread.

Not a day goes by that I don't think where the fuck is Terry, much like who the fuck is Alice.

I am pretty sure I am still not dead, I check my pulse almost daily.
