I've been using metasploit for a while and it's actually wonderful, but it's time for me to start creating my own exploits and payloads. Where do you recommend I start? I already know how to program something in c and c++

Learn ruby programming for a start. There are also guides on exploit development.

Writing the exploit isn't as hard as finding the exploit. Metasploit is a good starting point since youre already familiar with it. Look at how those are engineered and use the base models for your own exploits,
