Ways to test myself. - Verdun - Dec 18, 2023

Hello Everyone, first post here.

I have a lot of academic knowledge about cybersecurity and was wondering what you guys would suggest to turn my academic knowledge into hands on work/experience? In the past I've created simple malware, however I would like to gauge where I am in comparison to other people/just generally get better at hacking/cybersecurity. So any advice/comments I would greatly appreciate. Thank you for your time.

TL:DR
What can I do to sharpen/develop new skills. Have a lot of academic knowledge and wanna get better with hacking.

Hi,

You'll have to define "academic knowledge". Is it offense or defense or both?
  • You can try to set up a Cloud EDR and put agents in your personal devices.

  • Cloudflare is free. You can get a domain, plug it into Cloudflare, and watch the logs.

  • You can rent some infrastructure for 4 USD a month and make a honeypot.

  • You can try some deliberately vulnerable targets, like https://hackthebox.eu which incidentally is gameified.

Cheers.

To clarify Academic Knowledge, I should have stated that I got a degree in Cybersec (So a 50/50 of Offensive and Defense). I do appreciate the ideas/suggestions and I will most definitely look into them. The main reason I wanted to ask about testing myself is I am aware that there is a substantial disconnect in knowing how to do something versus actually doing it.
Thanks!
