Opinions on TryHackMe and Hack The Box - RebelAscete - Jan 18, 2024

Hello Everyone,

I joined this forums mainly because I'm planning on learning cybersecurity and I'm looking for opinions on services dedicated to complete beginners in the field. Without taking too much of your time, I read a bit about those two services: TryHackMe and Hack The Box. As a person living in semi-wealthy country, I have to consider the price of those services hence my question: are they actually worth it? Did you try them and have something positive (or negative) to say about them? Should I get one of them, or maybe both, or maybe something else entirely? If it matters, I'm an avid computer user since I was 8 years old so the basics of IT aren't going to be a problem for me.

Thank you!

Hack the Box might be harder if you are a total beginner. If you want to learn things the easier way I would recommend Try Hack Me more :)

Hey RebelAscete welcome to HF

I wrote a thread that will help you : https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=6247225 this is the first version, I'm currently writing version 2 and I'll release it in few days I think, post in the thread so I'll tag you when the new version is ready

If you have any question feel free to post in the thread mentioned above, in the following one https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=6255488 or in the White Hat Hacking forum

But to answer your question this is what I wrote in the thread :
How can I practice ? (Online section)
o [Image: 6rnxtAc.png] TryHackMe (the one I recommend if you begin)
o [Image: nfglxpv.png] HackTheBox (more advanced than TryHackMe, you can go on it after being familiar with cybersecurity)
o [Image: TWYggLu.png] Root-Me (general)
o [Image: cqpoExf.png] Cryptohack (for learning modern cryptography)
o [Image: smDFvmo.png] VulnHub (downloadable intentional vulnerable virtual machines)

Thank you Yseurk, I bookmarked your guide - it seems to be very comprehensive. I purchased subscription on TryHackMe, I guess I'll see where it takes me. Thanks again, see you around. :)

I have no experience with try hack me but Hackthebox is really cool as they do teach you from the ground up and give you a lot of good feedback that will help you in the future when it comes to real world examples.
