New to Hacking: Seeking Guidance and Resources - SIM-5480515 - Jan 29, 2024 Hello everyone, this is my first post here, and English isn't my strongest suit, so please forgive any potential mistakes. I'm an absolute beginner in the realm of hacking and am unsure where to start. However, I do have a background in data science, Python, Java, SQL, and have worked with systems like Ubuntu, but only to the extent of what I've learned in university. After doing some research on forums like this one and on the internet at large, I've encountered a plethora of courses, posts, books, etc., but with so much information available, I'm at a loss about where to begin or even if this is the right place for these types of inquiries. I would appreciate any recommendations on books or any general documentation to start experimenting on my own. Just to give you an idea of what I'm interested in, my motivation for delving into this was the desire to see if I could access the information from unknown devices connected to my WiFi network. RE: New to Hacking: Seeking Guidance and Resources - resetti - Jan 29, 2024 Hacking is a massive subject, what got you interested in hacking? Maybe you saw a cool hacking scene in a movie and you want to do something similar? Or maybe you just want to get into cyber security and hacking in order to make some money/become better at computer security? Answering what part of hacking you are interested in will give us a better idea of the type of hacking you want to do, since you've got many different types, software hacking, hardware hacking, RF hacking, social engineering (human hacking), etc etc. As a beginner though, i would highly recommend you visit https://tryhackme.com and https://academy.hackthebox.eu, these two sites have great resources for learning offensive and defensive cybersecurity subjects, and they have interactive practice rooms too. TryHackMe do have a premium subscription, but its only like $8 and its 100% worth it, you get access to such great learning paths, same with HackTheBox Anyways, reading down below to the bottom of your post i saw you mentioned you motivation being "the desire to see if I could acces the information from unknown devices connected to my WiFi network". Yes, this would be possible, you can even use your phone to scan a Wifi network for devices which are on it, there is an app called Fing for Android an IOS, it scans Wifi networks and gives you information about the devices connected to it! However, on a laptop, with an external Wifi adapter that supports monitor mode/packet injection, you can (in some cases) control the traffic being passed through the network, and modify it, so you can redirect people to your malicious website for example. Bare in mind, this would only work on non-secured, HTTP web pages, and NOT HTTPS web pages, HTTPS is encrypted, you cannot read, or modify it when it is encrypted. Oh yeah, and no, you wouldnt be able to "force-install" malware on their phone or computer just cus they're on the same network as you, unless they're using a very old Windows computer that is vulnerable to the EternalBlue exploit, then you might be able to, but apart from that, you would instead need to convince them to download and execute some application, you can obviously hide and obscure this application to make it look like a real "software update" or something, luck is obviously required, and you'd need to make sure your file doesnt get detected by Antivirus, otherwise it will get removed obviously. Still, that would be a basic example of an attack that you could do to devices on your network, though most websites nowadays are encrypted and secured with HTTPS, so you cant sniff a lot of local network traffic anymore unfortunately, it used to be fun back in the day, when nobody was bothering with HTTPS and you could go to your local McDonalds and spy on literally everyone lol. Hopefully that gives you an idea. RE: New to Hacking: Seeking Guidance and Resources - Euaggelistes - Jan 29, 2024 You'll find quite a wealth of information, and essentially a road map, to getting started here ---> https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=6247225 RE: New to Hacking: Seeking Guidance and Resources - Qijes2 - Apr 15, 2024 thansk seems pretty good. RE: New to Hacking: Seeking Guidance and Resources - DynamicW - Apr 15, 2024 Hackthebox, tryhackme, portswigger, picoctf and just watching videos on youtube. You should have basic systems knowledge and networking knowledge too before learning hacking. And yes as Euaggelistes said that post is also pretty good https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=6247225 |
