Use Nethunter Rootless. It's enough for basic recon and password cracking until you root and/or reflash your phone.

Certainly. You can try to do the same things by fetching python and ruby scripts or compiling binaries yourself. Why would you?

Absolutely. I would say that you need solid knowledge of system administration to understand hacking. Hacking is being able to break things and exploit computers in unintended ways. Networking and programming are just as important.
