You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but can you pick a lock? - webdev77 - May 12, 2024

Any fellow members here into locksport and lock picking? I was just watching some LockPickingLawyer videos for fun and figured there's got to be plenty of others here who follow as well.

What's the toughest lock you've tried picking?

I think it’s a pretty cool concept. I’m not very good at it though, but acquiring the tools made it a lot easier. When I misplaced my key inside of my toolbox, I had to spend a few hours picking the lock. Eventually I was successful.

I never got into it, but I think it has applications to hacking that alot of people don't think about. So many aspects of pen testing can revolve around physical access to devices. I've even seen a documentary where someone picked the lock on his target's office and went rummaging through the trash for cell phone numbers/bank statements/bills/etc.

There’s a reason why you came across this thread. It’s time to pull the trigger, and join the Thieve’s Guild.

Most places picks are legal unless you can show intent, like you were just in the act or post-act.
Being a locksmith with tools to break/pick/open locks is not illegal. Not being a locksmith can result in charges like "criminal tools" or "intent to commit robbery", along those lines, if there is enough to assume what you were up to, not just driving down the road.

Some places also restrict the sale unless certified. Also some of them want detailed information about sales (bought/sale either).

I have been messing around with tubular locks lately for fun. Not really anything I will ever use, just for fun.

Some kids put a padlock on our fence one time, so I watched some videos and picked it (after about a week's worth of attempts). I've always been curious, but never have taken the time to really learn the skill.

I tried picking simple locks using a card for two-way doors which took me seconds and also successfully picked a lock with a paper clip and a screw driver which took me hours to successfully done but only for experimental purposes back then.

The only way I know how to pick a lock successfully with door knobs is to smash the door knob itself. Lol. But I wouldn't call that pick locking. Hahaha.

Would love to learn more from you guys if somebody posts in this thread.

Lock picking in general as a hobby is not illegal. You can pick your own locks all you want. Picking a lock that isn't yours very likely would be considered breaking and entering or similar. Thieves also generally don't pick locks. They can just kick your door in or break a window. It's a common misconception that having a hard to pick lock actually provides more security. Most the time physically destructive techniques can be used for forced entry. It would be highly unusual for a criminal to get caught picking a lock as most common criminals really aren't skilled individuals.

Nice work. That's one of the wonders of the internet of being able to learn how to do random things like this.

Years ago when we had little personal cabinets to store your desk equipment in like pens, paper etc. I was messing around with a paper clip trying to pop my friends cabinet cause it was locked. Popped open. I was sooooooo buzzing.

That was it though!
