Junior cybersecurity jobs - Nigo - Jun 9, 2024 Hi, I keep getting rejected from junior IT roles and cybersecurity roles anyone have an idea what i can learn in order to break in? I have my sec+ and bachelors in IT 3-6 months experience in helpdesk thanks. RE: Junior cybersecurity jobs - webdev77 - Jun 9, 2024 Help desk is only vaguely related to cybersec jobs. You probably need to do a better job tailoring your resume to explain why you want to be in a security position rather than help desk. It's likely unclear to hiring managers that you are qualified compared to others with backgrounds specifically in pentest and incident response. They r supposed to write what requirements they need, the courses and languages u must learn i think RE: Junior cybersecurity jobs - webdev77 - Jun 9, 2024 (Jun 9, 2024 09:09 AM)Jamika Wrote: They r supposed to write what requirements they need, the courses and languages u must learn i think Honestly, I wouldn't read whatever this advice is trying to say if you can't even write a proper sentence. 0/10 would not hire. There is no magic language or framework tool you can learn to break in, but hard work and dedication, cyberseurity needs wide range of knowledge and skills from networking to programming/ scripting, threat response etc ... Participating in CTF would help, write ups on the field helps as well, it doesn't need to be complicated or be the winner of all ctfs, it will show that you have the basics and willing to learn, CTF can be added to a the resume btw, it is like building a portfolio/ experience, and you will have stuff that can get the attention of a hiring manager, you need to show potential. RE: Junior cybersecurity jobs - Chung - Jun 9, 2024 I can’t really help you with any useful input but talking to my siblings friend. The cybersecurity industry is hella competitive at the mo so you really need to stand out from the crowd! RE: Junior cybersecurity jobs - Nigo - Jun 9, 2024 Thank you everyone for your replies. I am currently building labs and going to document it in my portfolio and I will learn python since it is needed for automation in the field. RE: Junior cybersecurity jobs - Bastille - Jun 9, 2024 Hey buddy, hope it's not too late At what step you often get rejected ? Interviews ? You don't even reach interviews ? Recruiters don't call you back ? For junior IT roles, helpdesk can be easily accessed. Helpdesk often leads to admin, and this is really valuable for the cybersecurity field. For cybersecurity roles, it depends. There are lot of jobs in this realm, what are you applying for, SOC analyst ? Pentester ? GRC ? Forensic ? Programming ? Sec+ is a very good certification but it's theoretical only, you need to practice on the tool you'll work with / match the company's requirements Building a lab is a great idea, you can even go to the job interview, connect to your lab (with a VPN you set up for example), and show your lab to the recruiter, they like this because you show that you're really involved. Just in case check this thread, it may help you : https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=6263412 If you have any question feel free, welcome to HF :) RE: Junior cybersecurity jobs - Exile - Jun 10, 2024 (Jun 9, 2024 08:55 AM)webdev77 Wrote: It's likely unclear to hiring managers that you are qualified compared to others with backgrounds specifically in pentest and incident response. To add to what Webdev said, Sec+ is a pretty standard cert and it's likely that most of your competition is also going to have it. The credentials you shared with us look like the bare minimum and in the current industry you need things that really make you stand out. They are probably getting 100 resumes that look just like yours. RE: Junior cybersecurity jobs - Nigo - Jun 10, 2024 Thanks for the reply I read through your thread and its very informative thanks for that. I want to gain experience in the cyber field such as SOC analyst and work my way up from there. Im getting automated rejection emails. Could it be my resume format etc? RE: Junior cybersecurity jobs - happygonutty - Jun 10, 2024 Experience is always a must so you have to really start from rock bottom and gain some experience points despite the fact we all know you have the capabilities in order to do the job and get the job done.
