Ai-powered systems in Amazon grocery stores need a lot of backup? - The Pact - Jul 1, 2024

“Just Walk Out” technology installed at many of Amazon's physical grocery stores is an AI-powered system enabling customers at many of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go shops to simply pick their items, and then leave.

However, back in April it was widely reported that rather than solely using AI, Just Walk Out needed around 1,000 workers in India to manually check almost three quarters of the transactions.

Companies like Amazon are making over-inflated claims about their use of AI. It is a phenomenon that has been dubbed “AI washing” in reference to the environmental "green washing".

Who knows if they mean it this time for real or if it is a publicity stunt like the last time they announced they had a ai store where in the end over 30 indian people sat infront of the cc footage and counted what the people took in theyre baskets..... I think they just wanna see the publics reaction, also im not sure if this ai processing system is even legal nowadays..

Some of these companies claim to use AI when they're actually using less-sophisticated computing, while others overstate the benefits of their AI over existing techniques, and they go and pretend that their AI solutions are fully operational when they're not at all.
