Its really depends how far into production your going.
If you looking for software vst based vocal compression then I would say the 1176 from Universal Audio or the CLA-3A from Waves both are individually good. However, for out of the box results for vocals Nectar 4 by Izotope is IMO the best.
I don't think many people unless running a pro studio are gonna be using hardware compressors but something like Universal Audio 1176LN would be the option there.
