Can anyone recommend a good anime to start with for a beginner?

RE: Anime recommendations - Bastille - Sep 14, 2024

Hello, what do you mean by "beginner" ? You mean that you never watched anime before ?

Besides, be aware that there are different kind of anime :

1. Shonen (少年)

Target Audience: Young boys, typically ages 12-18.
Themes: Action, adventure, friendship, rivalry, personal growth, often with a male protagonist.
Examples: Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece, My Hero Academia.
Typical Story Elements: A hero who faces numerous challenges, usually involving fighting or battles, and a goal to become stronger or achieve something great.

2. Shojo (少女)

Target Audience: Young girls, typically ages 12-18.
Themes: Romance, relationships, coming-of-age, emotional drama.
Examples: Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket, Ouran High School Host Club, Cardcaptor Sakura.
Typical Story Elements: Focus on romance, emotional conflicts, and friendships, with more emphasis on character development and personal feelings.

3. Seinen (青年)

Target Audience: Adult men, ages 18 and up.
Themes: Darker, more mature storytelling, psychological depth, violence, political intrigue, existential themes.
Examples: Berserk, Tokyo Ghoul, Attack on Titan, Ghost in the Shell.
Typical Story Elements: Complex plots, anti-heroes, moral ambiguity, and often more graphic content in terms of violence or sexuality.

4. Josei (女性)

Target Audience: Adult women, ages 18 and up.
Themes: Realistic romance, daily life, mature relationships, slice-of-life, personal growth.
Examples: Nana, Honey and Clover, Paradise Kiss, Usagi Drop.
Typical Story Elements: Focus on the emotional and psychological aspects of life, often with more grounded and realistic depictions of love and relationships.

5. Isekai (異世界)

Target Audience: Various age groups.
Themes: Fantasy, adventure, world-building, reincarnation or transportation to another world.
Examples: Sword Art Online, Re
, No Game No Life, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.
Typical Story Elements: Protagonists are transported or reincarnated into a parallel world where they often have special abilities or roles, leading to epic quests and self-discovery.

The recommendation will depend on what kind of anime you like. Have you been interested in any anime ? Did you hear about some in particular ? Or do you have friends that talk about animes ?

A tip : don't necessarily go straight to the new ones, for example if you watch AA+ anime from 2020 to 2024, with good animation and so on, it could be harder to then watch older anime that usually had less budget back in the days and not as good techniques as today.

Depends on what you are most drawn to. Action, comedy, horror, fantasy, adventure? If you could answer that, a better answer would be possible.

I would say that you wouldn't go wrong with Dragon Ball /Z/GT/Super.

If you are older, and if you haven't watched any anime, it will be difficult to stick with it, in my opinion. Of course, it also depends more on what type of person you are.

I always recommend Cowboy Bebop, the dub is the best their is and is a classic

Ghibli films are always good for beginners. It's much shorter than seasonal anime, great story, fantastic animation, and is well-received by people that don't even watch anime.

Princesss Mononoke or Spirited Away.

My Hero Academia is a great starter anime, its full of action and fun to follow!

Also has a ton of amazing characters and its easy to get attached to atleast one!

For someone who never delved deep into Anime, but really wanted to get into it, the best place for me to have started was with Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. I don't know if the Anime experts would even constitute those shows to be anime, but for someone who's interested in the space but not completely sure, I highly recommend Dragon Ball as just a fun place to start..

Not sure if that's a controversial opinion or not.

Otherwise, take a look here --> https://collider.com/popular-anime-series/

I usually suggest Inuyasha. It's a classic. Afro Samurai if you're looking for a more cyber punk vibe.

Yu Yu Hakusho is a great show to start off with - Shounen genre btw. English dub FTW!

RE: Anime recommendations - Trust - Sep 17, 2024

A great place to start is either Frieren or Spy x Family.

That time I reincarnated into a slime is great, I wish I could watch it for the first time again.

I love trash isekai tho. A new one that is only subtitled is called Failure Frame and that show is so fire.
