Virtual machine safety - Noobausaurus - Sep 14, 2024 Hi ! I just started learning about cybersecurity. And just discovered the virtual machine. I saw that with kali Linux virtual machine you don't share the same ip with the real computer. So my question is Why some hacker get caught by the police ? I assume they use virtual machine so they should be completely anonymous no ? And if not is there a way to be completely anonymous ? The Internet isn't some nebulous thing where packets jump from one machine to another through the ether. Connections are routed. A hypervisor gives little OpSec on its own. Even with cloud services, a hacker may leave breadcrumbs for forensic investigators to follow. RE: Virtual machine safety - Delfin - Sep 14, 2024 I'm not sure what you mean by "don't share the same ip with the real computer", but this is incorrect. Both will have the exact same public IP. I believe you're thinking of the private IP address within a network. Your private IP is basically how you can identify separate devices on the same network. Basically, the actual IP you use to access websites is the same, so this doesn't provide any anonymity. There's many steps to having good OPSEC, and it requires various changes, not just using a VM. If you want a guide for OPSEC, check out https://anonymousplanet.org/ - it's the most comprehensive guide you'll find, and it's fantastic. I've read that entire guide before, saw it linked on techlore a few months ago. Great to see someone post it here. Jumping off what you said, I would highly recommend everyone read what Delfin linked, it offers a ton of detailed information. |
