English or Japanese? - Tyr - Oct 7, 2024

I know many of you hardcore anime fans will likely choose one dub over the other, however, I recognize that it depends heavily on the anime and voice actors involved. What type of language do you prefer to watch your anime in? English or Japanese?

RE: English or Japanese? - Vipеr - Oct 7, 2024

Japanese audio is always better than English for any show.
The emotions conveyed and the overall quality difference is incomparable.
The only time dub is worth is if you're playing it on a secondary monitor while you do other stuff.

In my case it would be Japanese or French, and it depends on the anime, some dubs are veeeeery good in french, using famous french actors and people who use to dub animes, so the emotions and so on are here.

I noticed that as anime became more popular, the actors doing the dubs are more involved and more close to the japanese voice acting, comparing DBZ released in the 90's and JJK it's definitely not the same thing.

This one gives me goosebumps to be honest, the voice actor is Eric LEGRAND, he has been the official voice actor of Vegeta since the beginning :

In this case I wayyyyy prefer the french version

Depends on the anime since some are so out of pocket and funny its better to watch in English like Ghost Stories, The Devil is a Part-Timer and High school DxD for example but for the majority of the time its in Japanese. When I am bored I just have the english dub version going in the background even though I have seen the anime subbed before.

Lots of stuff gets lost in translation. I prefer the audio to be original with subtitles in English

This is the way.

Ask any "true anime enjoyer" and they will say subtitles over dubs any day.
I used to enjoy subtitles more and I found the dub voice acting a bit cringe-inducing when I would switch over out of curiosity.

These days... I prefer dub.
It just feels a bit more personal with everything in my own language and, for what it's worth, I think the quality of dubs has increased substantially over the last few years.

I saw an anime in both Sub and Dub.

In the Dub, they couldn't explain the same concept in the same amount of time, they had to repeat the frames of the characters talking and extend the conversation to make sure the Dub relayed same information as Japanese.

That's just one of the examples of why I prefer Sub.

Another reason is how much passion Japanese voice actors put into their roles, notorious example would be Kenjirou Tsuda.
Whenever I see him involved in a project I think "this is going to be good".

Final Remark: Watch Anime/Foreign Shows/etc however you see fit and however makes them most entertaining to you, if you enjoy Dub more there's no need to point out why you do for me.

Oh wow, so you are bilingual I am assuming? And yes, the passion is unparalleled. DBZ voice actors for Funimation did a very good job of the dub but I think they were horrible in Super. I do not contextually or semantically understand Japanese like you do it sounds like though. That must be awesome to experience from a viewer's perspective because most of us do not have that luxury :(

I speak and understand multiple languages, sadly Japanese is not one of them and I don't plan on learning it if it's just to "enjoy anime more".
That being said, Some words and sentences are so frequent that I understand them now.

Fun Fact: I saw a YT short of a Japanese language instructor, he said that watching some shows is great for beginners but not every anime.
He pointed out couple of names and said he always recommends people in his class to watch those, they use words and sentences you would hear in normal day-to-day interactions and they have interesting stories so it's a win-win.

Interesting! I think it would be an excellent idea for foreign language teachers to incorporate some type of learning methodology using Anime as a way for people to learn Japanese. I would LOVE to work in Japan one day when I am finished with my duties here...

That's no question.
Japanese for sure!

Unfortunately there are not many ways to learn it unless you study it on your own or pay for a class because it's not a typical ELA requirement in post secondary eduation.

It's honestly a dream of mine to land a decent remote job and move to the suburbs of some Asian country (provided all the utilities are there ofc lol).
Doesn't necessarily need to be Japan, but would be sweet if it were.

Rent would be pretty cheap and I would enjoy interacting with wonderful people and cultures.

What if you were given the opportunity to relocate there based on a job where they switch things up every few years and have you go to different offices? In Tokyo, from the pictures I have seen of the city from others it's incredible; exhibitions, bars, everything looks exactly how you would expect it to be but the innovation is unparalleled at least compared to where I live.
