Expenses Tracking? - banonkiel - Oct 12, 2024

Couple of months ago on HF, I read a reply by another user that he kept track of his expenses.
I always planned to do so as well but always kept postponing it.

Eventually, I created a small Excel file on my personal drive where I keep track of everything.
Earnings (from both day job/side-hustles), Expenses, Bills, money I owe, money I'm owed, purchases, etc.

I always thought I'm responsible when it comes to spending my money but tracking my expenses helped even more.

What about you? Do you track your expenses?

I track mine from an excel file called Money Money Money.xlsx - I am a true banker :)

My wife is old school and has a planner that also has the household budget in it. She does it all in the book.

For my rentals and my business, I do everything in spreadsheets.

I use a mobile app to track all my expenses and categorize them automatically for easy budgeting.

Would you be able to share this template? I cant be fucked to create one and the online ones are pretty shit.

I have tried to do this but I have too many expenses and too many transactions to keep up after it. Now that I've started a small business, I'm just going to let the tax guys handle it all.

Lucky for you, i converted it to google sheets for my brother like a week ago. I'll send you a DM later tonight.

I use it to track debt repayments, savings and bills against my monthly salary after tax.

Don't need to write in deep details, just whatever you see fit.

Like personally, I write "Month/Year - Earning - Expenses - Rollover"
Keep in mind Rollover can be positive or negative depending if I'm moving debt to next month.

I have another sheet which is the details, date, how much spent/earned/comment or note.

So lets say this month I spent $100, I can check my second sheet which would have $20-$70-$10, when they were spent and what I spent them on.
Same for earnings.

I track my expenses to a certain extent. It's pretty much mandatory, as I have to pay taxes.. so need to keep track of those things.

Just enroll all your monthly set bills on a credit card , then manage the card statement easy clap. Then end of the year let your tax guy figure it out.
