Got scammed first time trying to rent an apartment. - Purgatory - Oct 17, 2024

So, me and my girlfriend were looking for apartments on FB marketplace. We are both homeless, we needed something cheap. Well, this one girl messaged us and I checked her profile out and ran some reverse lookups on pictures etc to make sure this was a legitimate deal. So, I pay this “woman” a 50$ application fee, everything seems fine and then she messages us claiming she accepted us. It was a duplex 450/month and 400 deposit.

We were going to give the deposit until she asked for it via cashapp or venmo and paypal. This shit immediately turned me off. So, me giving this alleged woman hope, persisted on either meeting or calling or just some official documentation of actually attaining the place. No call, refused to meet, and no documentation.

In the end, I lost 50$ to a fucking scammer and its the only money I have ever lost and the last money I will ever lose lmao.

Damn dude, that's a bit rough. But $50 application fees are the standard here in Canada I believe. It's an unfortunate loss :/

Yeah these sort of scams have become very common. I know a lot of rental companies are having to setup signs everywhere on their properties letting people looking at the property know the correct path of renting a property, and warning them about scams.

Sucks to hear. How did you pay her the 50$?

I have to see the apartment in person before I send any application fee over, why spend money to just apply to find out you hate the place. Plus I tend to get all application fees waved for my employment position, too bad I can't get the same for the damn pet rent + deposit.

$450 FOR A DUPLEX. That is a red flag man. Idk where you live but I pay $1580 a month for a two bedroom condo.

Just curious how you sent the application fee. I've never had this happen, but then I always like to see a place before applying. I have seen some scammers on Craigslist who send a link to a free credit check site and ask for a screenshot (which certainly isn't FCRA-compliant). No doubt it's some kind of identity theft scam. IP loggers embedded in emails work well with scams like this.

Go to your bank and ask if anything can be done. Also make a police report. Banks in the US have to maintain records of financial transactions and provide those records to law enforcement when subpoenaed. Under the Patriot Act, banks also have to verify the identity of their customers.
