Tool for recovering data off synology ssd? - XtremeDiscount - Oct 28, 2024

Is there a good tool for recovering data off a single drive (not raid) that was used on a synology nas? I had a storage pool issue and it says it doesn't detect drive, I then connect it and try to rebuild storage pool and it gives an error. I'm 99% the data is in tact and looking for a program that can possibly browse the drive on windows.

Since you're dealing with a Synology NAS drive, there are a few tools that could help recover your data via Windows, but keep in mind that Synology uses Linux file systems.
  • UFS Explorer Professional Recovery This is one of the best options as it specifically supports Synology's storage formats (both ext4 and Btrfs) and can handle their volume structure. It can read and recover files even when the storage pool metadata is damaged.

  • R-Studio Another professional tool that can handle Linux file systems and has good success with NAS recoveries. It can work with damaged or corrupted file systems.

  • GetDataBack While less specialized for Synology specifically, it can handle ext4 file systems and has a good track record with data recovery.

Before you do anything though, first you need to create a disk image/clone of the drive if possible, that way you can avoid any potential further damage to the drive. Also, it should go without saying but do not write anything new to the drive. Lastly, connecting the drive via a direct SATA connection rather than USB if possible is going to be your best bet.
