What are doin, pals? - skarab - Dec 9, 2024

Hi all, I'm working on my "participating in social interactions" skills... and a hacker forum is the best I can work up to at the moment, lol.
I figured I'd toss up a thread and see how it goes.

What is everyone working on learning/building/practicing/[REDACTED]ing?

Personally, I've got a hard on for Linux rn and am working on getting a Arch installations on all of my machines that suites my needs. I'm excited to dive into the magical realm of ricing and learning the way of the dotfile.

Hello,

Linux is a must have speaking of skills ! Do you already use Linux as your daily distro ? It's a good way to learn everyday

For my part, I'm focused to SOC analyst skills (tier 2), I'm looking to work as a SOC analyst. I'm practicing on Letsdefend, on Hackforums too when people share programs and I perform malware analysis. Recently Tryhackme release the Advent of Cyber, which seems to be focused on cybersecurity and SOC analyst position, so I'm planing to do it. Finally, when all of this will be completed, I'm thinking about getting a computer for a homelab (building a SIEM, SOAR, IDS/IPS, MISP, Cortex, The Hive, OpenCTI, OpenVAS, and every thing required in a SOC, so I could present this during job interviews).

I would like to focus more on Linux too by the way

Yo! I just checked out Letsdefend as I've never heard of it before. It looks like a awesome resource and one that I will keep in mind as I get further along. I'm actually starting the THM Advent of Cyber tomorrow. I have done it the last 2 years and it's slowly becoming a tradition, I'm a bit of a scrooge when it comes to the holidays, and the Advent of Cyber has definitely lifted my spirits and given me something to look forward too! I'm also interested in spinning up a home lab, mostly for self-hosting, but also for doing red-team labs. My current obstacle preventing such a lab is financial in nature... I'm broke! Someday soon, though. Lol

As for my experience with the superior OS (jkjk), I absolutely love Linux. I've been using it for a while now -- a couple of years. But never as a daily driver, as I typically use my desktop for audio production and the programs that I use are not natively supported on Linux. However, I've decided to ditch windows entirely after learning about comparability layers, like Wine. My departure from Windows is what leads me to wanting to configure an Arch installation that suites my needs, I intend to get all of my devices to work as seamlessly as I can.

*Obligatory "O use Arch, btw" :p

What has your experience with Linux been like? Do you have any experience using tiling window managers? Or have any advice on configuring Arch and managing dotfiles? I'm also curious how you got into blue teaming and you ambitions to become a SOC analyst? (I'm so deprived on nerds in my daily life, I'm actually all giddy and excited that I get to talk an actual soon-to-be SOC analyst! Haha)

Thanks! I'm always down for gaining more knowledge.

I'd be curious to know, what at are things that you do know about? What is it that gets your fingers typing in this cyber world?

Oh you already completed two advent of cyber nice ! Always good to see new people on HF with skills.

Yeah homelabs are really to improve our skills but it can be an expensive hobby haha

I faced this problem too regarding some software / usages that were not compatibles with Linux, so I've setup a dual boot. Sometimes it's annoying because I have to restart my computer to change the OS, but with this configuration I mainly use Linux, and when I want to play videogames I move on Windows.

Mmmmh my experience so far with Linux, I've used Ubuntu for few years, I've also tried Manjaro, then I had some issues with Ubuntu upgrading to 24.04, so I've decided to move on Fedora and I'm really happy with it (with KDE). I didn't play with WM, I've seen a lot of people using things such as Hyprland which looks very sexy but also sounds complicated to setup and get familiar with haha, what about you regarding this ?

Regarding SOC analyst, I've been working as helpdesk tech for few years, then moved on sys / network admin, then I handled cybersecurity tasks, and I've been interested in SOC analyst role. Regarding my experience getting into Tier 1 SOC analyst will probably be annoying, I'm more interested in incident handling or malware analysis and so on, things which require more skills than just alert triage ... and as I'm already familiar with hacking, sys admin, logs, and all those stuff I think I can start straight to Tier 2 SOC Analyst. I'm practicing on THM and Letsdefend, and I'm planing to then apply everything on my homelab.

There are few SOC analyst on HF, or at least people who worked as SOC analyst, there are also many profesionnals or experienced members, hope you'll learn a lot ! Do you already work in this field or do you plan to do it maybe ?
