US Navy bans DeepSeek - Foxxy Proxies Ltd - Jan 29, 2025 The US Navy has barred its sailors from using the artificial intelligence model released by the Chinese company DeepSeek, CNBC reported on Tuesday. In an email sent to service personnel on Friday, the Navy warned that DeepSeek’s R1 model had been forbidden “for any work-related tasks or personal use.” The Chinese AI should be avoided because of the “potential security and ethical concerns associated with the model’s origin and usage,” the message explained. The Hangzhou-based start-up DeepSeek released its AI Assistant app earlier this month, and by this week it had become the most downloaded free app on the US Apple App Store. The platform has been developed for a fraction of the cost of the AI market’s US-based dominators, particularly OpenAI’s ChatGPT, yet reportedly scores consistently as high on key performance indicators. Later in the day, a US Navy spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the email to CNBC. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday that the US National Security Council is “looking into” the implications of Deepseek’s AI. The rapid rise of the Chinese model has caused turmoil on the US stock market, with major tech companies such as Nvidia suffering substantial losses as investors express concerns over the potential disruption posed by DeepSeek’s cost-effective AI solutions to established industry giants. OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman wrote on X on Monday that the Chinese AI was “an impressive model, particularly around what they are able to deliver for the price.” However, Altman vowed that his company would “obviously deliver much better models” and claimed that having a new competitor was “invigorating.” US President Donald Trump said earlier that the release of DeepSeek’s model was a “wake-up call” for US tech companies to step up and compete. RE: US Navy bans DeepSeek - Hackers - Jan 29, 2025 Makes sense, I work with a few companies who can’t even use US based Ai because of gov contracts and regulations This is a good idea to prevent DS as it’s a direct line to CCP. RE: US Navy bans DeepSeek - BiNBo - Jan 29, 2025 Not surprising, I’d expect this pretty much fed wide. Source? And yes, I pretty much expected this. But you can't cite national security on this because its free and open source, unlike chatgpt which is closed source and paid. RE: US Navy bans DeepSeek - Pr0m3th3us - Jan 29, 2025 Im not in the navy but....Im not ready to download this on my phone yet guys. I might not EVER do it. I don't trust the Chinese apps. What with TikTok and that Huawei (spell check?) company....but leave it to the Chinese to replicate something and make it a cheaper product... Well, this is the basis of communism. In communism they believe that everyone should have products, not just the rich and priviledged. So while the products might not be high class, they are a bit lower, but are affordable so everyone has a chance to get one. I understand the concepts behind this philosophy. Communism is about “sharing” and evenly distributing the wealth, except the rich and elites get super greedy and don’t wana share lol and the ones who are high their end up ordering the killings of the lower tier so they don’t get to their level.
