Ethereums Pectra Upgrade Crashes Holesky Testnet - Tyr - Feb 25, 2025

Ethereum's Pectra upgrade on the Holesky testnet faced issues shortly after its launch on February 24, causing transaction finalization problems. A critical bug led to an invalid block being accepted by most Ethereum clients, resulting in the Holesky testnet being down for nearly two hours. Only two Ethereum clients, Erigon and Reth, functioned correctly, while others like Geth, Nethermind, Ethjs, and Besu were affected. Ethereum developers are actively working to resolve the issue, although recovery is challenging due to the complexity and the majority of nodes being on the wrong chain. The bug is specific to the Holesky testnet and is not expected to impact the mainnet launch. Pectra is one of two major Ethereum upgrades planned for the year, aiming to enhance account abstraction and Layer 2 scalability.

Hopefully, the devs can get things sorted out soon and ensure the mainnet won’t face the same issues. Still, Pectra’s upgrades for account abstraction and Layer 2 scalability are definitely something to look forward to once it’s all fixed.

That was a major hiccup for Holesky, but at least it’s reassuring that the bug is isolated to the test net. Seeing most clients accept an invalid block is a bit concerning, though.
