External USB WiFi Adapter Compatibility with Rooted Moto G Fast and Kali NetHunter - MohamedDoucet - May 1, 2025
I’m using a rooted Moto G Fast running the full version of Kali NetHunter (not the rootless version) and would like to know if I can use an external USB WiFi adapter for general networking diagnostics and wireless interface support.
My setup includes:
TP-Link AC600 USB WiFi Adapter (Archer T2U Plus)
UGREEN USB-C to USB-A OTG Adapter
The AC600 uses a Realtek RTL8811AU chipset, which is known to be supported under Linux with the correct drivers. However, I understand that most Android kernels (including mine) don’t include USB Wi-Fi support by default and may require kernel modules such as 8812au.ko or support for cfg80211.
My questions:
Can this adapter function for general wireless interface access in Kali NetHunter on my device?
Is it possible to load a matching .ko module into the kernel on the Moto G Fast?
Would I be better off using a NetHunter-supported device that includes wireless adapter compatibility out of the box?

You have the full version of Kali Nethunter on the Moto G Fast? Is that the generic kernel? I don't see the model listed as compatible. By "Nethunter-supported" do you mean that you don't have the full version?

Yes, I have the full version of Kali NetHunter installed on my Moto G Fast (XT2045-3) using the generic ARM64 build. The device isn't officially listed as NetHunter-supported, so it’s running the stock kernel — not a custom one with external Wi-Fi support. By "NetHunter-supported," I meant that I’ve installed the full toolset and rootfs, but I’m aware I don’t have full kernel-level features like monitor mode yet. I'm using an AR9271 adapter and may look into kernel customization later.

Using the kernel builder is going into the weeds. It wasn't a good experience for me.

yeah for sure once the adapter gets here ill test it right away
its an ar9271 chipset so it should work out of the box with the stock kali modules
no extra drivers no custom kernel just plug it in and go if all goes well

It's kind of funny, considering that Atheros was bought out in 2011.

yeah this is the one i ordered
ar9271 chipset with a 2dbi external antenna
should work out of the box with kali nethunter no extra drivers needed
just plug it in and it should be good to go
i'll test it as soon as it arrives and let you know how it performs
