I managed to create a hello world kernel driver:

Unfortunately, I found out that self-signed drivers don't work on systems with secure boot turned on. So writing your own driver is useless (unless you buy a $500 certificate for it).

Self-signed drivers don't work on systems with Driver Signature Enforcement on (so Vista and later).
