I also want to know if you wish things were different or if you have an appreciation for how you were raised? Was it your parent's choice or more financial?

For me I had mostly cooked meals, but because my dad was a real health nut the food was frankly subpar. Of course I appreciate the time taken for making the food, but as an adult I had to really broaden my culinary horizons.

I had the worst experiences with food as a kid. The home-cooked means from a step-mother were atrocious. My real mom could cook very well. My father could cook too but it was rare he made dinner for us. Maybe a couple times a year. Was always a treat. Now my Italian grandparents, holy mackerel they could cook. I would spend summers with them eating like a king. Then go back home to eat garbage. It was so bad that my favorite meal of the day was my school lunch which I always got a salad.

My step-mom had no idea how to cook, her efforts were a joke. Shit was always overcooked and under-seasoned. Bland dry food and she used canned or frozen veggies. Had no imagination. But it's all good, I grew up and made sure I knew how to cook based off my grandparents. Now I feed my family. I cook the meals. I have cooked meals for all my friends too. One thing an Italian does, is properly feed their family and guests.

In the real early days it was canned veggies and boiled chicken lol. Then in teens we ate tv dinners and pb&js. There were some good meals peppered in there. But we were on our own a lot.
I specifically remember when my folks got into who made the best ribs (they both only made probably one rack each months before mind you).
So we ate an ass load of ribs that night. My dad won.

I ended up taking culinary classes later for a couple years. Now days, I let my wife cook sometimes. I love her, but there's no imagination or creative liberties taken. I almost exclusively cook. I want food made my way, because its the best.

I'm fortunate enough to have home cooked food everyday, except for when I was a student, that was horrible :')
But I'm a bit spoiled and I want to have freshly cooked food everyday, however it takes a lot of time and in the end you are too tired to do other things that you want to do...

I guess my mother was a pretty good cook at dinner time. Most was nice. Real food. She mostly just made dinner though. I remember getting an egg or egg and bacon for breakfast being a treat I think she usually just gave us sugary cereals.

She also filled the house with heaps of junk food snacks being an American and my friends didn't have all those junk food snacks in their homes because they weren't American, and they'd be shocked by it.

I tended to be a skinny kid regardless though. Didn't put on any weight until my teens and then I was just one dress size bigger than I should have been.
