How I Accidentally Became an iOS Developer and Why It Wouldn't Happen Today

Ten years ago, I spent six months learning Objective-C, debugging endlessly, and fighting through every line of code just to release my first (ugly but real) app. Today, with SwiftUI and AI like ChatGPT, I can build the same app in minutes with just a few prompts. The definition of “developer” is shifting — from writing code line by line to describing ideas and letting machines do the heavy lifting.

Prototypes can be built in hours instead of weeks.
AI speeds up development.

Why Human Developers Are Still Essential in the Age of AI Code Generation

I've been watching the debate about AI replacing developers in many sites, and honestly, I think we're asking the wrong question. It's not about whether AI can write code (it obviously can), but about what development actually is.

Yes, I can prompt ChatGPT to generate a React component in 30 seconds. But then I spend 3 hours figuring out why it breaks when users have slow internet, or why it crashes on older devices, or why it doesn't play nice with our existing authentication system.

The real work happens in the spaces between the code:

• Understanding the problem - Half the battle is figuring out what users actually need vs. what they say they want
• Making it production-ready - AI gives you only the happy path. We should handle the edge cases by our hands.
• Debugging the weird stuff - When something breaks at 2 AM and the logs make no sense, we need human intuition, not AI.

The shift is real, but it's not replacement - it's elevation.

AI handles the repetitive stuff, and I focus on architecture, user experience, and the gnarly technical challenges that actually matter.

I believe that the AI gives developers Superpower, not fear as a competition.

The amount of overnight "developers" there are available now that one can get clean code from ChatGPT the likes, is a bit scary. Back in the day, when I would put in a request for a developer on the site.. I would get responses from actual developers. Coders who had time under their belt, who could actually code things from scratch. Coders who actually knew what the code they in their script meant. Not now. Nowadays everyone and their mother is a developer. Thank God I found my developer years ago, and can go to him in the event I really need something sophisticated coded.

It’s a great reminder of that chaotic, early-internet energy where you could just build something and people would find it.
