Traveling for work - Edge - Sep 8, 2025

I'll be traveling for work for the next 2 months.

Hotel wifi is a crisp 25MBs. Life is great.

Any traveling tips/tricks you can offer?

Double check & pack the daily essentials carefully so you dont miss important stuff. I prefer packing light as well for ease of travel.

Do you have a daily expense allowance? Expense everything if you're sell employed.

Which side of the world? I head up to CA yearly for work and always try to prepare a few events in advance as once I'm there I feel lost.

A great advice would be to wash your hands extra frequently when visiting hotels. Lots of traffic and you can easily catch something just by hand-mouth contact. It's worth it.

I used to be on a 50/50 travel schedule. It sucked sometimes.

Get out and see the town/city. Spend the extra money to make the trip adventurous.

I recommend a travel router. I've got a GL.iNet GL-AXT1800 myself. Many hotels leverage a captive portal to use their WiFi so you have to manually interact with it every time you first connect or your session expires forcing reauth. I always bridge my travel router on the first day I arrive in my hotel room, then leave it running as its own dedicated hotspot which all of my devices automatically connect to as soon as I walk in the room. Also allows me to set up a VPN server on the router so I can tunnel all my traffic wherever I like without needing to run independent VPN clients on each device.

Enjoy your time on the road!

If work affords the hotels, find one where you can earn points. 2 months at hampton will cost the company 80-100$ a night but you earn enough points to spend a few days in Waldorf Astoria.

Do you get to travel for work often? I can't imagine myself having to travel for 2 months for work. I think I would miss home too much.

A small first-aid kit saves the day more often than you think.
Blisters, cuts and headaches ruin trips fast.

Bring your own toilet paper. I had to travel a lot for my last job and always hated hotel toilet paper. Realized I can just bring my own toilet paper and never looked back.

I think someone else mentioned it, but a travel router for longer trips. I just have some cheap TP-Link thing and it works fine. I stopped bringing it after upgrading my phone plan to unlimited 15mbps hotspot so I guess it just depends on how good your phone plan is

Have you considered getting yourself one of those mobile hot spot things?
Then you don't have to rely on crapping hotel internet.
