Ocean "dark zones" ? - Hackers - Nov 29, 2025

Do you believe in these theories of activities in what you could call "ocean dark zones" ?

I believe almost all of it. US "journalism"/media always hyperbolize if not outright fabricate information when China's in the picture though, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese workers are being treated than people claim them to be.
People being kidnapped out of Thailand, Laos, etc. for "short-term work" and disappearing to these sorts of vessels is well documented, but those operations are typically run by gangs afaik.

I've been following Johnny Harris for a while and I like that he takes a curious approach with every topic and I think he is good at defeating bias. I don't think he has any reason to spread any lies, being it against China or another other country (I liked very much to understand the reality of what ICE is doing in the US if that helps give him more credibility). But he still produces his content with youtube in mind, not pure journalism, so take everything with a grain of salt.

The ocean? Who cares, what are your neighbors doing, what am I doing when I'm not on here?

Sure, I have a 9 to 5, but what if I don't? If you can't explain what someone closer to you is doing with any degree of confidence, why should you trust that unknown things aren't already happening?

curiosity, interest, research, knowledge, wisdom, power, profit.

These are all reasons to want to know what's going on in the ocean.

Curiosity - There are big fuck off squids that look awful and give me the weird feels.
Interest - This one drives you to do things, curiosity keeps you coming back.

Research - Finding out why do the things happen the way they do
Knowledge - Understanding the cause effect that relates to above.
Wisdom - Knowing that both of the above are important to get to this point.

Power - We are an amazing species that boils water to spin a fan.
Profit - Take said boiled water, remove the salt, and then sell it.

Easy right? Nah, I don't know, you can do you, I am being contrary as usual, if you want to explore, go nuts.

Curiosity - The octopus' stealth is more advanced than our military's.
Interest - What lost history can be found in our coastal regions?

Research - Ongoing
Knowledge - Iterative, never complete
Wisdom - Knowing that the best advances are not when exploration is optional, but necessary

Power - Understanding geothermal or other reactions, natural fields, winds, and currents can be great for a number of reasons, related to or unrelated to raw energy.
Profit - We don't know enough about the ocean to put a max profit on this.

Quote:Only about 5% has been explored in detail, and just 26% of the seafloor has been mapped with modern high-resolution sonar as of June 2024.

Do we want to meet more in the middle and say, I'll take Nemo Point, you can have the dodgy Triangle off the coast of Flo' Rida.

I'm taking Nemo Point after today.
I might add that to my lazy day watch list, though we'll see.

Interesting little chat here.
