Group owners/leaders controlling +/- popularity grants - jcole - Jan 7, 2026

It would be cool to see as a suggestion a group owner and potentially leaders be able to control how much popularity they are able to grant to specific members on a panel. A newer member joining a group with a +/-12 perk could be granted +/-1 every month for example until they hit the one year mark and reach that specific groups full perks. It serves as a probationary membership.. Joining a group, but not earning all of the perks yet.

Not sure if this suggestion will get flack or not, but I thought it would be a good deterrent for members that join groups, inflate their profile, and exit scam. Overall this is just a thought, and a lot of this boils down to groups needing to do better at vetting their members. I don't actually think it is Omni's responsibility to always have to clean up other's messes.

What are some member's thoughts on this feature?

Sounds good to me, that would probably also stimulate more internal group activity (Members trying to achieve max pop power).

I think that good scammers don't need the + or - 12 to get good popularity anyway. They just need be good at SE and to act cool in convo and get on with others as for vetting members better the amount of members that are scamming in groups is actually far lower than before and i know your referring to Vectura on this but it's been dealt with already and he was vouched by another member bullup, before being added to my group.

If group leaders need to fully vet the members maybe we should have IP access to look for traits too but until then it its the staff job and omni's to remove scammers from the forum and not a group leader or owners responsibility. Once a scammer is revealed they are mostly removed from all groups anyway but until that happens, how do you suggest we vet them without admin rights?

The groups with more active members will naturally have more scammers, so either be an inactive group or risk a very small % of failures.

The suggestion your making is valid but would need to complete redevelopment of groups and perks in order to work. I also see long running users abusing popularity system which isnt reputation anymore which again makes this really quite wothless so how do we deal with that.

Sales should be based on marketplace contract points system not popularity.

imho Quality, not quantity.
If you dont want potential scammers piggybacking on your group with no regard for its' reputation that's really on the group leaders/person who added to the group isn't it? Maybe I'm missing the function but I didn't think people bought groups to add total randos and people they didn't create explicit bonds with.

Another potential solution would be for group leaders/admins to audit members' sales threads and impose strict clauses should thy decide to sell with the group name--which should be happening anyway, I'd think.

If you don’t need them for perks or to benefit the popularity system, then don’t add them. Groups have turned into social clubs with no real purpose because of this. Everyone joins just to benefit from the popularity system without adding anything to HF.
