Law degree in artificial intelligence? - Cwither_ - Jan 27, 2026

Lately, with all the talk about deepfakes, it is possible that there will be a branch of law exclusively dedicated to this issue.

It takes time, but there will be.
More often than not law does lag behind life, but that is the consequence... Well one of many of democracy.

Technically you could be a major today in any branch of law and apply it to usage with AI given how spread AI seems to be invading into life.

One more model bro, trust me

It's not only possible, it's already something litigators are addressing.

Yes. The services of a lawyer or a firm specializing in AI related cases will only increase. It's a field that will have a future.

The primary areas of law today I think might include the following-

Privacy and Data Protection Laws
Defamation and Reputational HarmDeepfakes that falsely portray individuals and damage their reputation can trigger defamation/libel lawsuits
Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery
Fraud and Financial Crimes
Deepfakes used in scams (e.g., fake executive videos for financial fraud) can fall under wire fraud statutes.
Intellectual Property and Right of Publicity
Using someone's likeness commercially can infringe on right of publicity or IP rights.
Copyright infringement can occur if deepfakes incorporate protected material, though this doesn't address core misrepresentation harms.
Election Interference and Political Regulation
Platform Liability and Content Moderation although the rules with this have never been tough.
