CS:GO Community Servers Might Be Coming Back - Au Jus Demon - Mar 4, 2026

Looks like CS:GO isn’t completely gone after all.

Valve recently made Counter-Strike: Global Offensive available again on Steam as a legacy version alongside CS2. There’s no official matchmaking or Valve servers running, but the game itself can still be downloaded and played.

Even without official support, the game has already been seeing around 50,000 players online, which is honestly pretty crazy for something that was supposed to be completely replaced by CS2.

If you want to browse a list of active servers, you can check them here: GameTracker – CS:GO Server List

What this really opens the door for is the return of community servers.

Back in the day a huge part of CS:GO was just hopping into the server browser and joining random communities. Surf servers, jailbreak, zombie mods, and all kinds of custom stuff kept the game alive for years.

Now that people can actually install the legacy version again and player numbers are climbing, there’s a good chance we’ll start seeing some of those old community servers pop back up.

It probably won’t reach the same level it once had, but seeing tens of thousands of players back on CS:GO already makes it feel like the old days a little bit.

Maybe they took a note from Blizzard's WoW Classic servers. It might hurt CS2 but it could also keep the franchise alive as well.

One thing I know is that we will likely never get back the original feeling of playing games we enjoyed in our youth. It can be similar, but it likely won't ever be the same.

Valve would have never ran into this issue if they did not abandon community servers is CS2.

Mmmm, I'm not 100% familiar with CSGO, CS2 / Valve. I know of the games and played briefly probably 20 years ago in the original CS game but don't think I ever played GO or 2.

How do they stand up against the original?

I also haven't played a lot of CS2. Even back in CS:S I was almost always on community servers. Stuff like jailbreak, surf, bhop and other custom modes.

From what I’ve played though there is a reason Counter-Strike is still around. For what Counter-Strike is, they still just do it the best.

The big difference now is that a lot of those other gamemodes only really existed because of community servers. When CS2 released it basically wiped out a lot of those communities, so now it’s mostly just the competitive matchmaking side of the game.

Thanks for the context , that makes a lot of sense. I guess it would be like if Minecraft didn't let you self-host a server or mod anymore, and everyone had the same set of starting seeds with the same rules and graphics.

I mean i used to love CS:GO because they was a map that you can download and have pregenerated maps and it was the best. every time you played it, the map would change randomly. 10/10 best map. it was made by refrag.gg if my memory serves me right.

Yeah, I never really understood why they shut CS:GO down other than pushing people toward opening cases in CS2. And now with the gambling crackdown maybe they just gave up on forcing it. Who knows.

Probably the best map I played was called Rogue. It was in early release around the time CS2 came out. Not sure if the dev ever kept working on it.

But it was basically a pretty fleshed out rogue-like for CS:GO.
