Cybersecurity Advice - Xioxide - Apr 28, 2026

Hello, new to the forum and I've got a quick question.

Would going thru TryHackMe's career path be a smart choice, mainly leaning towards the offensive side. I have intermediate knowledge of how systems work, network & Linux & Windows.

Looks like they have good stuff, but you may find a path on HackTheBox Academy that interests you more.

You could also get into bug bounty hunting.

I've gone through a good bit of the TryHackMe content, overall it's a good foundation for further learning.
Once you make your way through that, you can look into taking an entry certification like the PNPT (from TCM Security) or the EJPT (from INE.)
While these are lower-tier certifications, they're still worth getting (assuming you have the funds for them) even if the only reason you get them is to prove to yourself that you can. I'd also classify Security+ (from CompTIA) in this category.

Down the road you can look at studying for the OSCP (from Offensive Security) or skip the OSCP all together and start looking at the CPTS (from HackTheBox.) I've been making my way through the course content of CPTS recently and it's amongst the best training resources I've personally come across. Well worth looking at if you're looking for a well rounded view of security overall.

With the field being as large as it is, it's worth exploring everything you can to see what you'd ultimately want to specialize in.

I'd definitely recommend TryHackMe's career path as a solid starting point for offensive security, especially with your existing foundation. What hasn't been mentioned yet is the importance of documenting your journey - building a portfolio of your labs, write-ups, and any personal projects can be incredibly valuable when you start looking for opportunities. Beyond structured courses, consider participating in CTF competitions too; they're fantastic for sharpening your skills under pressure and connecting with the community.
