Anyone else sick of software/hardware as a subscription-IE Security Cameras? - MadScientist - Jun 5, 2026

So sick of devices that require the same price as the device as a yearly subscription otherwise their devices are essentially useless. Got my old Wyze cameras out after some incident and they want $30 a month PER camera (the cameras literally cost $30 each to buy new) just to actually receive video alerts and smart alerts otherwise it just sends you a 3 second thumbnail -_-

Can you not use a SD card or any local storage to record? I had 4 Blink cameras setup and had them all recording to local storage, saved a lot of hassle.

Yeah I can but last time my place got robbed they took all my SD cards out and without paying the active alerts suck and normally miss a good image frame thats usable and a cooldown time between alerts not active image alerts - hella easy to trigger it with something random then bum rush it on cooldown - or they'd just shut off my power so no WIFI for alerts and take the SD cards

I've bought all new cams with better service but still paid to use after purchase

Damn sorry to hear about your home getting robbed, sounds like those updates are pretty essential and needed for your situation just a shame about the paywall. I would want it linked to my local police station paying all those fees lmao. Have you ever thought about closed circuit with a ups? They can cut your power switch your wireless of and it should keep rolling, at least enough to catch more footage/evidence. The amount you could possibly pay in $30 subscriptions could be worth upgrading the whole system overall.

The ones I got now hold a decent charge so hitting my power will only knock out wifi alerts but will still record SD, also got a couple non obvious hidden cameras too - just had an argument with a tweaker neighbor who 4 ppl surrounded me with a tire iron while walking my dog because "their dogs bark when we walk by so therefor I just shouldnt be allowed to walk down the street because their dogs are untrained" which aint happening. So I had to pull my dogs harness knife on them - sooooo want to make sure I got my cameras set up again.

Hate tweakers so much

"You will own nothing, and you will like it" - Palantir (probably)

I use one ring cam and just do the $6 a month.

Yeah I'd need several I had my back window broken out while I was sleeping last year, I have 6 cameras indoor/outdoor atm - don't have a back fence

A harness knife sounds bad ass, your dog sounds like he has your back. Sorry your experiencing this mate I have had bad neighbours only advice I can give you is to keep a complete timeline of all evidence that way if you have to defend your self or something happens you have everything logged and its more likely to go in your favour.

Yeah I already talked to some of the people and told them its water under the bridge and I dont take it personal, but then another fat drunk tweaker from another house they're linked with started the fight all over again -_- Broo I just want to live out in the woods with a couple dogs and a nerdy hippy chick living off the land. Cant stand being around shitty people :-P Hopefully the future holds something brighter soon <3

This is why people love "wireless" cameras and the cloud. They don't need $2000 servers or a knowledge of RTSP, ONVIF, and other hard stuff. Just pay every month for recording that can be accessed on a device that manages your life. This is also why criminals love Wi-Fi jammers.
