Getting paid every 8 hours: A complete guide to Funding Rate Farming - TryVariational - Jun 10, 2026

If you are tired of trying to guess market direction and getting chopped out by volatility, you need to understand funding rate farming. It is one of the most consistent ways to generate yield in crypto, and it carries zero directional risk.

What is it?
Perpetual futures don’t have an expiry date. To keep the perp price pegged to the actual spot price of the asset, exchanges use a mechanism called a "funding rate," usually paid out every 8 hours.

If the market is bullish and the perp is trading above the spot price, Longs pay Shorts.

If it's bearish, Shorts pay Longs.

Because every exchange calculates this slightly differently based on their own liquidity, massive discrepancies open up. For example, a token might have a highly negative rate on Gate.io (Shorts are paying Longs) but a slightly positive rate on a DEX like Variational.

If you go Long on Gate and Short on Variational with the exact same size, your position is delta-neutral. If the token pumps 20%, your Long makes money and your Short loses the exact same amount. But every 8 hours, you collect the massive difference in the funding rates. You are simply farming the spread.

The hardest part of this strategy used to be execution. Funding rates change constantly, and keeping six tabs open to manually compare Binance, Hyperliquid, Gate, and Variational to calculate the annualized spreads is a nightmare.

So I built a tool that does it for you: TryVariational.xyz/rates.

This dashboard tracks live funding rates across major CEXs and DEXs and compares them directly against the 500+ perpetual markets available on the Variational protocol.

What it shows you:
Instead of raw 8-hour percentages, the dashboard normalizes the data and spits out the annualized APR spread. It scans the market and hands you the exact pairs where the delta between two exchanges is the widest. It takes the guesswork out of finding where the capital inefficiencies are hiding.
