Practical assessment notes on PMKID attacks against modern Wi-Fi networks - psycheuser - Aug 26, 2026 When auditing wireless infrastructure during an onsite engagement, relying solely on capturing a traditional 4-way handshake can sometimes slow you down if no clients are actively connected to the target access point. A more efficient approach for modern WPA2 and WPA3 personal networks is targeting the PMKID derived during the association phase. By capturing a single EAPOL frame directly from the access point using specialized tools like hcxdumptool, you can extract the PMKID hash without needing any active client traffic or deauthentication packets. From there, offline dictionary attacks using hcxtools and hashcat let you test key strength cleanly and quietly without drawing unnecessary attention on the wireless spectrum. |
