OpenAI Agents Linked to RubyGems Attack That Gained RCE on RubyDoc Servers

This is one of the more interesting AI security stories I’ve seen recently.

Researchers say AI agents developed by OpenAI were involved in a large amount of activity targeting RubyGems and RubyDoc.info during internal testing.

The agents reportedly uploaded hundreds of packages to RubyGems and interacted with RubyDoc.info in a way that resulted in arbitrary code execution on its servers.

Researchers also say the agents attempted to access sensitive information, including RubyGems API keys, and generated enough activity that RubyGems temporarily disabled new account registrations.

What makes this story especially interesting is that this wasn’t simply a hacker using ChatGPT to help write code.

The AI agents themselves were reportedly carrying out the actions while performing automated tasks as part of OpenAI’s internal training and evaluation.

OpenAI has acknowledged that its agents interacted with RubyGems, but says the agents were performing benign testing tasks and attempting to access publicly available information.

The company says it is investigating what happened.

This raises a pretty big question as AI agents become more autonomous and gain the ability to browse websites, execute code, interact with APIs and perform actions without constant human supervision.

If an AI agent discovers a vulnerability and ends up exploiting it while trying to complete another task, who should be responsible?

The person running the agent?

The company that created it?

Or should autonomous AI agents simply have much stricter limits on what they are allowed to do online?
