The OSINT threads are running dry - junooo - Sep 28, 2026

I fear that there is this idea around that if you only have enough things in your toolkit that you are a good OSINTer. But that's honestly script kiddie behaviour.

There is just nothing to do on HF, nothing to read. No news or interesting tools. It's all the same.
Everyone just sells a list of the same 8 sites used over and over again, as if googling it is too much work. I spent a good amount of bits on some of these documents only to find out that it's just some guys's github ripped off. At that point just have it on there for free.
I am active on other platforms regarding OSINT, but I like the grey area legality and doxxing requests of HF.

I honestly have nothing else to add. I just wanted to complain: I wish OSINT was more active here.

To be good at OSINT you need to be able to connect dots and use common sense the tools are for assistance not to do the entire work for you.

Exactly. But people think the other way around. And are sometimes blinded by revenge over something stupid. What do you have to gain from finding out where someones family lives. Go touch grass.

There could be a whole section for OSINT in my opinion. Would be kind of easier to get into it.

But the fact is that you have to find and learn it yourself, otherwise everyone and their aunties would be doing it.
So it is kind of 50/50 situation, but there is also many communities for it. I remember when 4chan went on a witch hunt for some ISIS training location and they found it using OSINT and they then gave the coordinates to the US who then bombed the place.

OSINT to me is all about just googling everything. Some people are just not prepared to look at a computerscreen for 9 hours before finding something.

And yeah, I remember the isis stuff. They also solved the MH17 crash and many other things. OSINT is amazing. The love of my life.

I'm working on an AI skill that combines a large number of sources to build a comprehensive picture of someone. Hoping to post it for Oktoberfest.

I mean I could see multiple good uses for that in the private security sector. Because we sometimes have people who are known to do bad stuff and the more info we have on them the better, because sometimes they are violent etc. Sadly we do not have any public registry for criminal offences or even for people convicted for crimes in the sexual sense. That would also help us more than the government could ever know. But they just keep talking about the "Individual" security and anonymity. Which sucks ass for us.

Get a subscription to one of the "background check" services. Criminal records are public in the US but not freely available necessarily.

Wont be much of help when I live and work in Finland xD Would be nice tho, makes things a lot easier if we would have a database for violent and sexual offenders.

Finland doesn't have a public sex offender registry?

Finland considers criminal records to be confidential.

Yup. You can make basically a FOIA request but that costs between 6 to 12 euros per slip. So in the long run that would become costly for the companies. Seeing that some of our places we might meet between 500 to 5000 people a day, so from that let say 4000 people just 1% would be 40 people. 40 x 6 euros would be 240 euros, or if it was 12 euros it would be 480 euros. And at worst of the weeks you would have to multiply that by 5 so 2400 euros a week. And thats why I would love it to be public information same with violent offences.
