Please help me with this problem - wrathsanguine - Jan 3, 2011

Okay, first of all thank you for your help who ever decides to help me.
If you don't help me you must not like me or are busy or something and that's fine also.

So my problem is that I ran a Nmap-Zenmap scan on my ip to check if I had any open ports because I apparently am not an administrator on my own laptop and stuff. So I scanned and it says I have like 3-4 open ports. Is there any way I can close them or secure them in order to make task safer for me?

Also I had a little bit of what I believed was a virus problem earlier this morning, I did a system restore but I believe the viruses came through the opened/insecure port. I think it's because I am on my laptop in my household and I run on their network. So if I could get some help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hi,
What type of Router do you own?

* - MouseDesign - Jan 3, 2011

You can acces your router/modem as an administrator. You can do that by connecting to your static IP, by standard this is

Code
192.168.1.1

You do need the login details.

Do you have a static or dynamic IP?

* - wrathsanguine - Jan 3, 2011

How do I find out what kinda router it is? Idk if it is static or dynamic either. I am sorry guys I am still kinda new to all this :(

Do what I said above. Try connecting to that "website" with the IP provided.

* - wrathsanguine - Jan 3, 2011

I know how to do that much, but when I try logging in it doesn't let me.

Check your papers which you received when they installed your router, or contact your ISP. Once you're there, you can just close them.

Okay thank you my dad is arguing we don't have a pw for it but if I don't put in a pw it's wrong I know the user name. This is so much trouble =| well thank you for the help everybody ^_^

Try the standard username - password options.

http://www.virus.org/default-password/
http://www.governmentsecurity.org/articles/default-logins-and-passwords-for-networked-devices.html
http://www.governmentsecurity.org/articles/default-logins-and-passwords-for-networked-devices.html

Try one of those out. Or just a simple one, such as Admin - Admin.

I appreciate the help guys. Truly sorry I had problems I have been getting a lot of pm's and replies to a thread of mine so not used to this but I greatly appreciate it and will reply if I have any problems

Okay. Glad to see such kind of appreciation. But in general an open port won't harm much. Unless it's one of the well-known standard ports such as 80. You're an easier target to get DDOS'd then.

* - wrathsanguine - Jan 4, 2011

That was one of them I believe and I can't figure out my pw or username for it

* - MouseDesign - Jan 4, 2011

Simply give your ISP a call, or check the standard PW list I've linked.

Thank you so much. I greatly appreciate the help volenar. You should be HJT team member in no time at all!

By the way volenar ISP is internet service provider or something?
