Pretty sure you can but it's recommended to change.

I tried changing password via CP and and it change the old pass to new one, where both(old & new) were same.

I really hope he updates every upgraded user's options when it comes to the day as a lot of people are going to be mad if they didn't have that ticked :)

I think it is an option when you sign up.
