New to C/C++? Look Here First! E-Books, Compilers, and Guides - Super Effective - Apr 10, 2012

Preface:

I am tired of seeing a dozen or more "help me learn C++" or "point me to a good ebook" threads in this section. This thread might not help alleviate the problem, but hopefully some of those people will see this and refrain from making an all-too-common post.

Take note that this thread is not done, nor do I plan for it to be done (unless no one likes it). I will be updating this with new information and suggestions for additional books, websites, and IDE's. If you have a suggestion or an improvement to make, PM me.

Introduction

This thread is designed to compile the contents of any helpful thread I can find into one easy resource for new programmers. This includes ebooks, real books, some websites you can learn from, and places to download various IDE's for various operating systems.

To start out, here are some things that are nice to know:
  1. C was created in 1973 by Dennis Ritchie (1941 - 2011).

  2. C++ was created in 1980 by Bjarne Stroustrup at Bell Labs (1950 - ).

  3. C is the base of almost all computers, including Windows, Unix, and iPhones.

  4. Any proper C code can be compiled by a C++ compiler.

  5. C and C++ can be compiled on both Unix and Windows operating systems, but certain pieces of code are non-portable. (Ex. system())

Now onto the books and references.

Real Books

Yes, real books. The ones you buy. People nowadays don't understand that real books are good to learn from. Arguably better than e-books. So, if you have some money and really want to learn the concepts of C and C++, consider buying a few of these books.

Note: These are only books I have personally. I'd be happy to add books you think are good enough for others to learn from.

E-Book Threads

In this section I will post current and old threads relating to e-books and the like. I will not post them directly here simply because that would be stealing the original posters work. However, there is an exception for people who feel the need to use adf.ly links. In that case, I will post the direct link and their thread. You choose which to go to. Note that I do not account for duplicates and if you find any you will have to take care of them yourself.

Feel free to comment and thank the posters who gave you links to these e-books if you feel like it.

Format: Username - Title.

Warning: A common mistake new people make is download all the e-books they can and thinking that will make them learn. That is wrong, as it generally ends up with a huge collection you will never read. Remember to only download e-books you will read. Try downloading one at a time and try to learn from it. If you download a huge pack, just focus on one book at a time.

IDE's and Compilers

This section is devoted to all sorts of IDE's and compilers, if you couldn't tell from the section title. I will separate these into different operating system sections if they are not multi platform.

Windows

NEX IDE - Right here from HackForums

Microsoft Visual Studio C++ - Express Edition

Minimalist GNU for Windows (gcc/g++)

Code::Blocks

Pelles C

Eclipse CDT

Linux

Note: gcc comes pre-installed on most (all?) Linux distributions. It is a compiler, not an editor, and must be used via terminal.

Code::Blocks

Eclipse CDT

Mac

XCode

Code::Blocks

Guides

Here is where all the helpful and high quality guides go. If you think a guide qualifies, PM me the thread url.

Websites

Below is a list of helpful websites that you will probably end up using during your journey through C/C++. I find these invaluable for programming, as I always come across a function I'd like to learn more about.

Conclusion

Basically same as the top. I will continue to update this as new information and suggestions come to me. Feel free to PM suggestions for changes, additions, or omissions. Hope this is helpful to someone, but mostly I just hope this clears some of the spam.

Note: First draft, bound to be mistakes. Will edit as I find them.

Thank you very much! As a noob here on the forums and a person who truly wants to learn about C++ programming this definitely helped point me in the right direction.

Glad to see some people are getting some help out of this. Remember, if you have anything to add such as good books, another e-book thread, a direct link to some ebooks (will credit in post), a website that teaches C/C++, etc just tell me in a PM and I will add it.

I'm not sure asking for your thread to be stickied (at least for free) isn't allowed. However, if some moderator or admin thinks this would help as a sticky, then by all means do it.

As for SQL, if you work with databases then you'll use it probably, otherwise you can skip it.

Nice compilation.
Thanks a lot for the share.

Updated thread slightly. Added Pelles C IDE and a new section where future guides will go. Thanks to Spl3en who made a good GTK+ guide which gave me the idea to add it to the list.

Changed it. Hope you enjoy.

Now lets get back on topic. Anyone have suggestions for additions?
