Senator Interogates FBI's use of Zero Days and Phishing The chairman of the power-wielding Senate Judiciary Committee is questioning the FBI director endorsement of the use of phishing attacks. spyware, and other controversial tools. Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) sent a letter the director of the FBI, Jame Comey, asking for "more specific information about the FBI’s current use of spyware" The letter is a list of very specific questions about the reasons and way the FBI uses remote code exploitation. The letter is related to an effort by the US Department of Justice to get more leeway for using malware in criminal investigations. The letter asks for specific ways and specific methods that the FBI is using, including more specifics on how they use zero days or tool provided by exploiters. “Which spyware, related programs, and other network investigative techniques has the FBI used in the field since 2009? Please include both government-created programs and ones purchased externally if any, from companies such as Hacking Team and Gamma Group International,” Grassley asks in the letter, sent June 12 to Comey. Both companies develop and sell exploit kits and intrusion software the law enforcement agencies. Intelligence agencies and military branches are well known for using exploits for zero-days in their work, some of which are found and developed internally. The NSA and US Navy have both been known to utilize zero days. >>Source Harvard Breach From June Hit Multiple Schools Harvard University was recently required to warn some of its students that the school had fallen victim to a data breach last month and that it's still in the processing of determining the size of the attack. Anne Margulies, Harvard's vice president and CIO, informed students and faculty late Wednesday night that eight schools and administrative organizations may have been breached in the June 19 breach. Harvard has noted that it is plausible that school email logins and email information may have been exposed. The University has given very little information about the attack, however, it is believed that no research data, personal data, or student PINs have been exposed. Harvard has asked the graduates and undergraduates of some of its schools to change their login information as soon as possible due to a possible compromise of login credentials. It is also unclear have many students were affected by the breach, the school has been rather vague in regards to attack. >>Source pinterest Patches Vulnerability in API Well known social media site Pinterest recently fixed a vulnerability found in its web app API that allowed remote attackers to compromise emails and to hijack sessions as well as conduct phishing attacks. Vulnerability Lab researcher Benjamin Kunz Mejri discovered the vulnerability, which is a persistent mail encoding and validation web vulnerability. Despite Pinterest's developers fixing the issue very quickly, patching in a mere two weeks, the vulnerability was not revealed until Monday. The issue was found in the 'contact_name' value of a User Profile scheme. After registering, attackers were able to compromise a user's emails or random emails with their own scripts. “After the inject of malicious script code the service stores the account in the database management system,” reads part of the disclosure, “The attack vector of the issue is located on the application side of the online service and the request method to inject is POST.” Remote attackers could register with Pinterest and then send malicious 'Pins' to other users. The bug is one of 47 identified since Pinterest formalized its bug bounty program with Bugcrowd in May 2014. >>Source
Fallout Shelter Coming to Android in August
Fallout Shelter, the recently released mobile game where players create and maintain their own Fallout shelter in the Fallout Wasteland, has been an iOS exclusive since it was announced and released during E3 this year. His response to a fan’s inquiries on twitter were as follows: "[It's] coming along nice. Haven't announced a date, but should be out next month. We'll let you know when we have specifics." The game is currently serving as a taste of Fallout to keep fans interested until the release of Fallout 4 in November, with characters from Fallout 4 making appearances in Fallout Shelter. Fallout 4 will be available on November 11 on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC. >>Source Gaming Subreddit Goes Private With the unexpected release of an extremely well-liked employee of Reddit many subreddits have been going private in an effort to protest the mismanagement of Reddit and its employees. One such subreddit that went private in protest was r/Gaming, the most popular video game discussion forum on Reddit. However, the subreddit was not down for very long, as the moderators of r/Gaming decided that a complete shutdown of the forum was not the best option for the subreddit’s users or as a form of protest. The subreddit is expected to stay public unless another bad decision worth protesting in the management of Reddit is made. >>Source Gift for Five Year PSN Subscribers It was five years ago that the Playstation Plus service began, introducing an optional premium membership level for players on the Playstation Network. The tablet boasts a 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 128 GB of storage, and 8 GB of RAM. The device, named ProxyHam, uses 900 MHz radio signals to transmit Wi-Fi connections nearly three miles away at the longest. The device routes the local traffic to a far wireless network to make finding the actual source of internet traffic more difficult. According to Caudill, the device is designed to be used in combination with programs such as TOR, or a VPN for maximum privacy. The device runs on a Raspberry Pi base, and both its design and code will be free to the public. Caudill has stated that more about the device will be revealed at this year’s DefCon. >>Source Chicago to Add 9% “Netflix Tax” Beginning September 1st, the city of Chicago will begin to target services such as Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, and other internet services with two new taxes, in a plan to generate revenue for the city. The two taxes will be an “amusement tax” and a “nonpossessory computer leases” tax. The tax will generate an estimated $12 million per year for the city of Chicago. Netflix’s responded to the tax, "Jurisdictions around the world, including the US, are trying to figure out ways to tax online services … This is one approach." >>Source
Greek Debt Follow-Up Following up from the article written for last week's HF news; Greece debt crisis just took a surprising turn as Greek voters reject the bailout offer from the European Union. More than two-thirds of the ballots counted showed a decisive answer of rejection with figures showing almost 61% voted "no". This means that Greece has been left in a small limbo but the result could now see Greece being ejected from the European Union with European officials saying a "No" would be seen as an outright rejection of talks with creditors. Greece now hopes to go back into negotiating a new deal in terms of their bailout but it is unknown if this will happen soon if at all. Maybe Greece could try a crowdfunding option instead? >>Source Saudi Prince Donates $32bn To Charity Some feel good news now and as a Saudi Prince, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, has donated $32bn of his fortune to charity saying "he had been inspired by the Gates Foundation, set up by Bill and Melinda Gates in 1997" and Mr. Gates responded calling Prince Alwaleed an "inspiration to all of us working in philanthropy around the world". Prince Alwaleed is at number 34 on the Forbes list of the world's richest people. He has self-proclaimed himself as the "Warren Buffett of Arabia" and for obvious reason. The money will go to the prince's charitable organisation, Alwaleed Philanthropies, to which he has already donated $3.5bn. He said he hoped the gift would "help build bridges to foster cultural understanding, develop communities, empower women, enable youth, provide vital disaster relief and create a more tolerant and accepting world". >>Source Tunisia State Of Emergency Declared In response to the terrorist attack which just over a week ago killed 38 tourists, mainly Britons, in the resort city of Sousse, Tunisia has declared a state of emergency.
