Interview - Buzz Lightyear
.Sinister: Welcome, Buzz Lightyear to the 247th edition of the HF News! Any shout outs you want to make before we begin?
Buzz Lightyear: None in particular, just a general shout out to all of those that have stuck with me through it all.
.Sinister: To start off, can you tell me a bit about yourself?
Buzz Lightyear: I am 19 years old in college studying mechanical engineering with a double minor in business administration and mathematical sciences.
.Sinister: Ah, that's really good! What brought you to HF back in 2010?
Buzz Lightyear: I originally looked up "how to hack facebook accounts", and Google led me to HF.
.Sinister: Haha, seems like that's what most members here have done. You were originally a group owner? Can you tell me more about that?
Buzz Lightyear: Well I became involved with Graphic Masters, back when it still existed. Over time, I built up a reputation, and became friends with iBruteforce, one of the old site administrators. He passed on leadership to me and eventually randomly made me group owner. I was group owner for a year or two and saw many changes in the group. I eventually became less active on the site due to school, so I passed on the ownership and then leadership to others.
.Sinister: In all honesty, did you like the HF back then or the current one we have now?
Buzz Lightyear: I preferred HF back then. I think that's how most things go though. When you start out, those around you become your friends, so five years later, it's totally different people. I do think HF has started to revolve too much around money, and has migrated away from the relaxing and enjoyable environment it once was.
.Sinister: Yeah, I understand your point. If you could change one thing about HF now, what would it be?
Buzz Lightyear: Since my focus is in graphics, I'd like to rename the section "Rate My Graphic" to "Graphics Showcase and Discussion". That section has always been filled with low quality posts, and boosts some egos to the point where they won't accept criticism. A change in name will encourage better posting, thus increasing overall quality and atmosphere in the section.
.Sinister: I see. What got you started with graphics?
Buzz Lightyear: My father worked with Photoshop for his job some, and so I began to mess around. I was a member of another community where signatures were common and I began to learn and practice there.
.Sinister: Would you consider yourself a "graphics master"?
Buzz Lightyear: I wouldn't. There are many, many others who can create much better pieces than I could imagine. If I had continued to practice and work to improve with as much vigor as I did the first couple of years, then maybe. I will argue, however, that I know how designs should look. I don't have the best designs myself, but I know how to critique and find flaws in designs. Similar to an elderly coach who may not be able to perform as well as the players, but know how to coach and play the game.
.Sinister: Are you continuing to improve your graphics skills or work on other things?
Buzz Lightyear: I have been working on other things. I love graphic design, but as I work towards my career, I have lost the free time to work on my skills. I do plan on utilizing design in my career. I want to go into mechanical design, so I have been focusing on 3D modeling, rather than working on things in Photoshop.
.Sinister: That's good to hear! What do you think about the current groups?
Buzz Lightyear: I think that they are too exclusive. I don't see a lot of community service provided, with the exception of one group I noticed. I believe groups became too much about your status, or how much money you have, rather than bringing people together that have common interests and passions.
.Sinister: Yeah, it's not like before. Hopefully someone can step up and change that. Are you still as active as before?
Buzz Lightyear: I am not. This summer I have become active in commenting in the graphics section, hoping to shape up some quality in that tab, but once school starts back up, I will most likely become more inactive.
.Sinister: Aw, that's good and sad to hear. I guess it's best for you. What do you do outside of HF?
Buzz Lightyear: I am active in a social fraternity on my campus, and love to do anything outdoors. I don't spend much time on my computer at all like I used to. I am certified in just about everything the American Red Cross has to offer, so I spend much of my summer training others to be able to make a difference and save lives.
.Sinister: Wow, that's incredible! Thank you for taking the time to be here with us. Anything else you want to say before we wrap this up?
Buzz Lightyear: I encourage everyone to not settle. When you settle and become satisfied with where you are in life, whether school, jobs, or even graphic design. It promotes a terrible attitude, and doesn't benefit you or anyone around you.

Zeus and SpyEye Distributors Arrested by Europol
Suspects accused of infecting over ten thousand computers worldwide with the Zeus and SpyEye banking malware are now behind bars. The five suspects had used both these malware to steal money from banks both inside and outside of Europe. The team of distributors all had unique "abilities" and used them to modify the malware and infect many people. They had cause more than two million euro's worth of damage. The team had also used mule networks to launder the money. The operation had been under the rule of the (JIT) Joint Investigation Team. The take down was part of an major investigation that was first initiated in 2013. Between the dates of June 18th and 19th the five suspects had been arrested. >>Source
Magento Zero-Day steals Credit Cards
Magento a popular e-commerce site owned by eBay has a vulnerability which allows hackers to steal your credit cards. Back in April a Remote Code Execution Flaw had let hackers compromise any online store that had been powered by the popular e-commerce site Magento. This had allowed the hackers to steal credit card information online. Magento is a very popular site and is at the top one million e-commerce sites for Alexa which drives in a lot of traffic. This had put Magento as a very valuable target for hackers. >>Source

Senator Interogates FBI's use of Zero Days and Phishing
The chairman of the power-wielding Senate Judiciary Committee is questioning the FBI director endorsement of the use of phishing attacks. spyware, and other controversial tools. Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) sent a letter the director of the FBI, Jame Comey, asking for "more specific information about the FBI’s current use of spyware" The letter is a list of very specific questions about the reasons and way the FBI uses remote code exploitation. The letter is related to an effort by the US Department of Justice to get more leeway for using malware in criminal investigations. The letter asks for specific ways and specific methods that the FBI is using, including more specifics on how they use zero days or tool provided by exploiters. “Which spyware, related programs, and other network investigative techniques has the FBI used in the field since 2009? Please include both government-created programs and ones purchased externally if any, from companies such as Hacking Team and Gamma Group International,” Grassley asks in the letter, sent June 12 to Comey. Both companies develop and sell exploit kits and intrusion software the law enforcement agencies. Intelligence agencies and military branches are well known for using exploits for zero-days in their work, some of which are found and developed internally. The NSA and US Navy have both been known to utilize zero days. >>Source
Harvard Breach From June Hit Multiple Schools
Harvard University was recently required to warn some of its students that the school had fallen victim to a data breach last month and that it's still in the processing of determining the size of the attack. Anne Margulies, Harvard's vice president and CIO, informed students and faculty late Wednesday night that eight schools and administrative organizations may have been breached in the June 19 breach. Harvard has noted that it is plausible that school email logins and email information may have been exposed. The University has given very little information about the attack, however, it is believed that no research data, personal data, or student PINs have been exposed. Harvard has asked the graduates and undergraduates of some of its schools to change their login information as soon as possible due to a possible compromise of login credentials. It is also unclear have many students were affected by the breach, the school has been rather vague in regards to attack. >>Source
pinterest Patches Vulnerability in API
Well known social media site Pinterest recently fixed a vulnerability found in its web app API that allowed remote attackers to compromise emails and to hijack sessions as well as conduct phishing attacks. Vulnerability Lab researcher Benjamin Kunz Mejri discovered the vulnerability, which is a persistent mail encoding and validation web vulnerability. Despite Pinterest's developers fixing the issue very quickly, patching in a mere two weeks, the vulnerability was not revealed until Monday. The issue was found in the 'contact_name' value of a User Profile scheme. After registering, attackers were able to compromise a user's emails or random emails with their own scripts. “After the inject of malicious script code the service stores the account in the database management system,” reads part of the disclosure, “The attack vector of the issue is located on the application side of the online service and the request method to inject is POST.” Remote attackers could register with Pinterest and then send malicious 'Pins' to other users. The bug is one of 47 identified since Pinterest formalized its bug bounty program with Bugcrowd in May 2014. >>Source

Fallout Shelter Coming to Android in August
Fallout Shelter, the recently released mobile game where players create and maintain their own Fallout shelter in the Fallout Wasteland, has been an iOS exclusive since it was announced and released during E3 this year. However, it has recently been hinted at by Bethesda’s Pete Hines that the game may be released on the Android mobile operating system this August. His response to a fan’s inquiries on twitter were as follows: "[It's] coming along nice. Haven't announced a date, but should be out next month. We'll let you know when we have specifics." The game is currently serving as a taste of Fallout to keep fans interested until the release of Fallout 4 in November, with characters from Fallout 4 making appearances in Fallout Shelter. Fallout 4 will be available on November 11 on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC. >>Source
Gaming Subreddit Goes Private
With the unexpected release of an extremely well-liked employee of Reddit many subreddits have been going private in an effort to protest the mismanagement of Reddit and its employees. One such subreddit that went private in protest was r/Gaming, the most popular video game discussion forum on Reddit. However, the subreddit was not down for very long, as the moderators of r/Gaming decided that a complete shutdown of the forum was not the best option for the subreddit’s users or as a form of protest. The subreddit is expected to stay public unless another bad decision worth protesting in the management of Reddit is made. >>Source

The tablet boasts a 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 128 GB of storage, and 8 GB of RAM. Even with such a high resolution display, Microsoft claims the tablet will have a nine hour battery life (max). ProxyHam: The 2.5 Mile Range, Anonymity-Oriented Router
Ben Caudill, a security researcher, has created a Wi-Fi router with both incredible range, and anonymity. The device, named ProxyHam, uses 900 MHz radio signals to transmit Wi-Fi connections nearly three miles away at the longest. The device routes the local traffic to a far wireless network to make finding the actual source of internet traffic more difficult. According to Caudill, the device is designed to be used in combination with programs such as TOR, or a VPN for maximum privacy. The device runs on a Raspberry Pi base, and both its design and code will be free to the public. Caudill has stated that more about the device will be revealed at this year’s DefCon. >>Source
Chicago to Add 9% “Netflix Tax”
Beginning September 1st, the city of Chicago will begin to target services such as Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, and other internet services with two new taxes, in a plan to generate revenue for the city. The two taxes will be an “amusement tax” and a “nonpossessory computer leases” tax. The tax will generate an estimated $12 million per year for the city of Chicago. Netflix’s responded to the tax, "Jurisdictions around the world, including the US, are trying to figure out ways to tax online services … This is one approach." >>Source

Greek Debt Follow-Up
Following up from the article written for last week's HF news; Greece debt crisis just took a surprising turn as Greek voters reject the bailout offer from the European Union. More than two-thirds of the ballots counted showed a decisive answer of rejection with figures showing almost 61% voted "no". This means that Greece has been left in a small limbo but the result could now see Greece being ejected from the European Union with European officials saying a "No" would be seen as an outright rejection of talks with creditors. Greece now hopes to go back into negotiating a new deal in terms of their bailout but it is unknown if this will happen soon if at all. Maybe Greece could try a crowdfunding option instead? >>Source
Saudi Prince Donates $32bn To Charity
Some feel good news now and as a Saudi Prince, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, has donated $32bn of his fortune to charity saying "he had been inspired by the Gates Foundation, set up by Bill and Melinda Gates in 1997" and Mr. Gates responded calling Prince Alwaleed an "inspiration to all of us working in philanthropy around the world". Prince Alwaleed is at number 34 on the Forbes list of the world's richest people. He has self-proclaimed himself as the "Warren Buffett of Arabia" and for obvious reason. The money will go to the prince's charitable organisation, Alwaleed Philanthropies, to which he has already donated $3.5bn. He said he hoped the gift would "help build bridges to foster cultural understanding, develop communities, empower women, enable youth, provide vital disaster relief and create a more tolerant and accepting world". >>Source
Tunisia State Of Emergency Declared
In response to the terrorist attack which just over a week ago killed 38 tourists, mainly Britons, in the resort city of Sousse, Tunisia has declared a state of emergency. The state of emergency allows Tunisia's security forces more power and limits the right of public assembly. Authorities had already tightened security who deployed more than 1,400 armed officers at a hotels and beaches. Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi said in a national address that "exceptional measures" were needed. "In order to face up to this scourge we need to be prepared. We need to have enough troops, proper training and material means - we are in desperate need of material means," he said, appealing for international counter-terrorism support and co-operation. The state of emergency will be in place for 30 days which can be renewed if needed. >>Source
