I used to go graphics but I just couldn't afford the legit addition of the program and I don't want to torrent it.

If you have good intentions of just trying out the programme and learning and maybe later on down the line you decide to buy it no harm done.

Great question, wolf.

My suggestion is to open a blank sheet and just messing around with the tools.
How? Open PS, In the upper left you should see 'File' left click that, hit 'New', then enter the dimensions 1500x1500. Get used to the tools and see what ones do what and how they work.

Once you figure out your tools, I suggest you find a stock image to edit. You can add text over it, you can color on it, you can blur areas.. Do whatever you want.

Basically, just get used to what each tool does.

Then after you get used to Photoshop and how it works, browse channels like 'Flow Graphics'
And you can learn how to do basic things from there. Once you learn one thing, learn another. And move on from there.

I highly suggest you download some GFX Packs. These are .psd's that are filled with helpful images, tools, filters, etc that will help you.

Just slowly progress and just get to learn Photoshop and it's basic tools before you get too advanced.

These are the tools I want you to learn first, let me know when you figured them all out!

I have a brief understanding of how to make GIFs through Photoshop but I don't have a very clear understanding. Help?

You can start by making a simple moving gif signatures and playing around with the tween button. I even have a tutorial for that you can find here; Royalty | How to make a moving signature by Fiber‌

If you get stuck or have any other questions me and chase are always around somewhere 🤝

To make gifs in photoshop, is rather hard, as photoshop is not entirely optimized for animation, the feature was introduced in CS5, I believe.

With that said, I believe you already know how to get the timeline etc.

Now, with that, you need to figure what you want to make, if you want to animate characters, you are going to make a lot of layers. These layers are a frame each, as an example:

Make two frames, on one frame, switch one layer on, another fra, put it off.

The frames might be too fast, you can change the speed:

If you really want to make something move fluently, use the tween option:

Like everything in photoshop, you can shift + click start till end for the frames, to change more at once.

For movement, you can follow the tutorial by Fiber.

Remember that photoshop is rather limited in regards to gifs and movement, unless you want to do everything by hand, fancy effects such as RGB split can be done, but are far more complicated than other programs.
Same with encoding/decoding, heck, even movement is more complicated than in after effects.

But for basic movement and small gifs, photoshop will do the job, you can use it for frame by frame animation, or movements ^^
And fancy effects can be done, it's just rather hard.
Another quick tip, transparent background won't work with photoshop.

Hope it helped ya :3
